PARIS

Christmas in Paris is certainly a magical time. Shops glow with colourful Christmas displays and patisserie shelves are filled with seasonal delights. The city’s most beautiful monuments are illuminated, 150,000 Christmas lights adorn the Champs-Elysées and department store windows are filled with animated displays. Markets, open-air ice rinks, merry-go-rounds and a host of other activities and events take over the city.

Traditional and popular Christmas markets are a major shopping event and are held from November onwards. There are markets in various parts of city: the best ones being at the Notre Dame Cathedral, Gare del’Est, Montparnasse, the Champs-Élysées and the Christmas village on La Défense esplanade.

ARRAS

Arras is the capital of the Artois region in Pas-de-Calais. It's a charming town with a very grand Grand Place, perfect for the Christmas market that takes over the town. Around 90 different exhibitors set out their wares around the beautiful arcaded Place selling local crafts, gifts, decorations and food. Try local delicacies like the pretty heart-shaped Coeurs d’Arras, either savoury (as in cheese) or sweet (ginger). There are various craft demonstrations, a large carousel full of leaping horses and an ice skating rink. Street performers will entertain you as you sip on that ever popular mulled wine.

AMIENS

Amiens, the capital of Picardy, has France’s largest Gothic cathedral. It’s beautifully lit up throughout December with a nightly son-et-lumiere making a wonderful background to the annual market in the heart of the city. The town is host to one of the largest Christmas markets in northern France with approximately 130 wooden chalets located in the City centre extending over 2 km. For food lovers, the market is home to many stalls selling chocolate and Amiens macaroons. Entertainment is provided in the form of shows and carol singing, as well as an ice-skating rink, merry-go-rounds and plenty of vin chaud - the perfect warm drink in winter. Wander through the pedestrianised streets with ease and be enthralled with Christmas trees, decorations and the festive atmosphere.

LILLE

Just a short drive from Calais, Lille makes a perfect festive shopping break decorated in lights and colour. It is hard to miss the enormous Ferris Wheel and Christmas tree, and the area around the Christmas market is covered in a huge crown of garlands. Step back in time and wander around the winding cobbled streets of Vieux Lille to soak up the festive atmosphere of Rue de la Grande Chaussée and Rue de la Monnaie. On Place Rihour, around 80 wooden chalets teem with gift ideas, nativity figurines, Christmas decorations and festive food. You can find not only regional specialties here, but also arts and crafts from around the world.
