Historic Krakow & Prague ‘The City of a Hundred Spires’

Our new twin-centre tour starts in the historic city of Krakow before we travel to beautiful Prague, the ancient city of a hundred spires – two incredibly popular cities due to their beauty and wealth of attractions. Our featured hotels are both centrally located - perfect for city tours - and our packaged itinerary also includes a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum and a river cruise.

Day 1 Arrival
After our overnight stops, we make our way to our hotel in Krakow and settle in prior to dinner.

Day 2 The Medieval & Renaissance City of Krakow Driver’s Day Off
After breakfast we will meet our guide for a 2 hour walking tour of Poland’s former capital, considered by many to be the most beautiful city in the country. Our centrally located hotel is ideally positioned only a five minute walk from the main market square with the historic Cloth Hall in its centre. For 700 years, Cloth Hall has been a market-place and is where textiles have been traded since medieval times. Upstairs, the Krakow National Museum (closed on Mondays) exhibits a wonderful collection of 19th century Polish art.  Every hour, we will hear the golden trumpet from the tower of the Basilica of the Virgin Mary playing a melody which comes to a very abrupt end on each occasion. Why? Because the trumpet melody commemorates a trumpeter from Krakow who was shot midtune by a Tatar archer in 1241 when he was warning the city of the approach of the Mongols who subsequently besieged the city! Other attractions include Wawel Royal Castle, built on Wawel Hill, where people have been living for 50,000 years and where, over the past 1,000 years, Polish Kings decided to take up residence.

Day 3 Memorial Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau 140km/87 mile round trip
Today, we pay a visit to one of the most moving and poignant sites in the whole of Europe.  The concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau is listed by UNESCO World Heritage as a site of great historical importance given that it was here that 1.5 million people were killed by the Nazis between 1942 and 1945. We will be provided with a guided tour through the museums and the original barracks.

Day 4 Prague to Krakow via Olomouc 535km/332 miles
This morning we leave Krakow behind and make our way to Prague. During our journey we can stop at the historic city of Olomouc. The main square is among the Czech Republic’s finest, surrounded by historic buildings and a UNESCO protected trinity column. The central streets are dotted with beautiful churches, bars, cafés and restaurants. Here we can try the local speciality, the famous Olomouc tvar?žky cheese, legendary for its distinctive flavour and aroma. We then continue to the Hotel Adria, our base for the next 3 nights.

Day 5 Prague Driver’s Day Off
After breakfast we meet our guide for a 2 hour walking tour of the beautiful city of Prague.  Full of cobbled streets around the old town square, there are ancient chapels, unexpected gardens and plenty of cafés and old-fashioned bars in this city full of stunning baroque architecture. Its attractions include the famous Astronomical Clock which has chimed since 1410, the gothic Charles Bridge, St Vitus Cathedral, the Church of St Nicholas (the most beautiful baroque church in Prague), picturesque Golden Lane and Prague Castle. Following our tour we have the rest of the day to explore the city at leisure before returning to our hotel for dinner.

Day 6 River Cruise & Prague Driver’s Day Off
We have this morning to ourselves and can explore the City of a Hundred Spires at our own pace. There is time for a leisurely lunch before we walk to the dock at ?ech Bridge to board our comfortable boat for a relaxing 2 hour river cruise. From the water we enjoy a peaceful view of Prague’s historical monuments such as Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, the Rudolfinum and the National Theatre. After reaching Vyšehrad cliff the boat returns.

Day 7 Departure
Today, we will leave our hotel behind and begin our journey home.
