Iconic Poppy Sculptures 2018 Venues - Weeping Window & Wave

Weeping Window is a cascade comprising several thousand handmade ceramic poppies seen pouring from a high window to the ground below; Wave is a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads suspended on towering stalks. These two sculptures, by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper, mark the centenary of the outbreak of war in Europe.

Initially conceived as the key dramatic sculptural elements in the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in 2014. Over the course of their time at the Tower, the sculptures were gradually surrounded by a vast field of ceramic poppies, each one planted by a volunteer. In their original setting they captured the public imagination and were visited by over five million people. Now, these two breathtaking sculptures are brought to audiences at venues across the country by 14-18 NOW as part of the Poppies tour.

WEEPING WINDOW - STOKE

2nd August – 16th September 2018
Middleport Pottery

Free with visitor entrance/guided tour

Middleport Pottery’s historic Grade II* listed site was built in 1888 for a well-known local ceramics company, Burgess & Leigh Limited. It has maintained unbroken pottery production since its Victorian inception. In June 2011, The United Kingdom Historic Building Preservation Trust (UKHBPT) stepped in to restore Middleport Pottery after the buildings had fallen into disrepair, and embarked on a £9 million, three-year project to regenerate and revitalise the site.

In June 2014, HRH The Prince of Wales opened the refurbished Middleport Pottery, now containing the Burleigh factory, visitor centre, shop and tea rooms. Today, Middleport Pottery is a thriving, exciting visitor destination, and continues as the last working Victorian pottery in the United Kingdom.

Group factory tours are available for an additional charge, call our sales team for details. Entrance to see the poppies is free when either a tour or visitor centre entrance are booked.

In 2018, in addition to the Poppy sculptures, IWM will present Making a New World, a season of innovative exhibitions, installations and immersive experiences at IWM North and IWM London which will explore how the First World War has shaped the society we live in today.

WAVE - PORTSMOUTH

13th April – 24th June 2018
Royal Armouries, Fort Nelson
Free to enter

Fort Nelson is part of a large ring of forts built to defend the naval base of Portsmouth, and one of five forts built on Portsdown Hill in the 1860s. During the First World War it became home to part of Herbert Kitchener’s volunteer army. The use of artillery became a major part of the soldiers’ experience of the First World War, and Fort Nelson now hosts large artillery pieces from Royal Armouries’ national collection of arms and armour, including the British Army’s largest surviving gun, the 18-inch, 180-tonne Railway Howitzer.

The Royal Armouries is guardian of one of the finest national collections of arms and armour in the world, with its origins based within the Tower of London. The Royal Armouries continues to have a presence in the White Tower at the Tower of London and at the National Museum of Arms and Armour in Leeds, as well as at Fort Nelson.

To make the most of your visit we recommend that you see the daily gun firing at 1pm. Please call our sales team, if you wish to include a private guided tour for your group.
