Nostalgic Lakeland Railways

Our exciting new packaged tour is based at our new hotel in the Lakes, the Cumbria Grand hotel, which is set in a fabulous location overlooking Morecambe Bay. Based here, we will enjoy nostalgic journeys through spectacular scenery on lovingly restored and maintained heritage railways, a cruise on Lake Windermere and afternoon tea at a very welcoming stately home – find out more below!
Day 1 Arrival
This afternoon, we will sweep along the drive to our hotel where we will enjoy a welcome tea or coffee before settling in prior to dinner this evening.

Day 2 Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway & Muncaster Castle 97 mile round trip
This morning, we enjoy a great day out beginning with a return steam train journey on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway from the coastal village of Ravenglass to the very heart of the Lake District. The carriages provide spectacular views of England’s highest mountains as we travel through beautiful scenery to Dalegarth, where we will disembark for a short break before our 40 minute return journey. At Ravenglass station we re-join our coach for a short 10 minute drive to Muncaster Castle, Gardens, Hawk and Owl Centre, where we will spend time exploring this haunted castle, its grounds and watching the bird of prey show.

Please note: the roads in Eskdale are very narrow and coaches can only turn around in one place

Day 3 Carnforth Station Heritage Centre, Morecombe & Leighton Hall 53 mile round trip
This morning we travel to Morecombe with a stop en route at the famous Carnforth Station Heritage Centre and Refreshment Room. We can enjoy the nostalgia of the station which was restored to its 1940s glory when the Refreshment Room was used as the setting for David Lean’s film “Brief Encounter”. After our stop we spend time in Morecambe, where we can simply enjoy being by the seaside, take a stroll along the promenade, stopping to admire the Eric Morecambe statue which looks out over the promenade, and enjoy lunch whilst taking in the views.

After our time in Morecambe, we spend the rest of the afternoon at Leighton Hall, where we enjoy a guided tour and a delicious afternoon tea. Home to the famous Gillow furniture making family, Leighton Hall is no stuffy museum and is very much lived in, with no roped off areas. Steeped in history and set in a spectacular location, the hall has a fascinating history and our friendly, entertaining guides will regale us with all its secrets! With pretty, traditional gardens to stroll in and a charming tea room in which to enjoy our afternoon tea, we will be treated to a quintessential English afternoon.

Day 4 Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway & Windermere Cruise 31 mile round trip
Today, we make our way to Haverthwaite Station from where we enjoy a nostalgic steam train journey on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway to the tip of Lake Windermere and Lakeside pier. At Lakeside, we then board our boat to enjoy a 45 minute cruise around the south of Lake Windermere, being treated to fantastic views across the wooded shoreline and distant Lakeland fells. Arriving at Bowness, we will have time to explore this bustling Lake District town before returning by coach to our hotel.

Day 5 Departure
Today, we say a fond farewell to our hotel and begin our journey home.
