Once Upon a Time in Picardy

Enjoy a wonderful long weekend in one of the most picturesque regions of France, with its fairy tale castles, champagne cellars, medieval cities and the moving historical site of the Armistice Clearing.

Tina says…
“Château de Pierrefonds is a true hidden gem and is absolutely stunning, located in the most amazing fairy tale town, I think the prettiest town I have seen in France.”
Day 1 Arrival
Today we will make our way to France and travel southwards to the Picardy region via the beautiful city of Amiens.

Day 2 Compeigne & Château de Pierrefonds 91km/56 mile round trip
Today, we will visit a moving historical site and a powerful symbol of peace, the Armistice Clearing, where the 1918 and 1940 armistices were signed in Compeigne. The Armistice Museum features a life size replica of the famous railway carriage in which the Germans signed their surrender on 11th November 1918 and where the French signed their surrender to Germany on 22 June 1940. We will then travel to the stunning fairy tale town of Pierrefonds. The town has a pretty town square and a lovely large lake in the centre and is dominated by the spectacular Château de Pierrefonds. We will have the option of visiting the castle, which doubled up as “Camelot” in the BBC series Merlin, located in one of the most picturesque settings imaginable.

Day 3 Reims & Champagne 160km/99 mile round trip
Today we will travel to the cathedral city of Reims. We will visit the Museum of the Surrender (where Germany surrendered to the Allies on 7th May 1945) and see the original ‘signing room’ which still remains intact. We will then be free to explore Reims at leisure before embarking on an afternoon visit to the Mercier Champagne cellars in Epernay. We will descend 30 metres underground and board a small train that will take us on a trip through part of the 18km long cellars! Once we return to the surface, we can enjoy a flute of Mercier Champagne.

Day 4 Departure
After breakfast today, we will begin our journey home. Depending on the timing of our Channel crossing, we may enjoy free time in the city of Arras.
