Rothenburg & The Romantic Road

Our hotel is based in the charming medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber on Germany’s ‘Romantic Road’ and our suggested itinerary includes an entertaining Night Watchman’s walk, brewery visit, a host of stunning medieval towns, beautiful castles and a fascinating tour of Nuremberg.

Jack says...
“Rothenburg is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe and one of Germany’s most popular tourist attractions. A tour with the Night Watchman will bring the town’s medieval history alive.”
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time to settle in prior to dinner.

Day 2 Rothenburg Driver’s Day Off
We will spend today exploring Germany’s best-preserved walled medieval town at our leisure. The imposing Town Hall, the stately towers, gothic churches and timber-framed houses create a scene of fairy-tale proportions! After an early dinner at the hotel we head back to town to join the Rothenburg Night Watchman on an entertaining and informative tour through the town. We follow him through dark alleyways and across dimly lit squares, enjoying the atmosphere of the town at night as we listen to his fascinating stories of how people lived in the Middle Ages.

Day 3 Bamberg 283km/176 mile round trip
Today, we will travel to the vibrant medieval town of Bamberg and visit its Imperial Cathedral, romantic Rose Garden, the medieval Old Court and the Old Town Hall that sits on a bridge in the middle of the River Regnitz. Bamberg is also known for having no less than nine breweries that create 50 different beers, so a visit to the Franconian Brewery Museum could be a good beginning to a potential Bavarian Bamberg Beer Trail adventure!

Day 4 Würzburg 126 km/78 mile round trip
After breakfast, we will travel to the ancient yet vibrant city of Würzburg where art, culture and Franconian wine are an integral part of everyday life. Much of the city’s history is concentrated in two main houses: the mighty Renaissance and Baroque structures of Marienberg Fortress and the magnificent Prince-Bishops’ Würzburg Palace. After exploring these two marvellous buildings, we can spend some time exploring Würzburg Cathedral and the centre of the town before returning to our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 5 Nuremberg 209km/130 mile round trip
This morning we make our way to the historic city of Nuremberg where we will take a guided walking and coach tour of the city’s main highlights. On foot, we will discover the medieval Old Town with its towers, turrets and intact town walls, the bustling Hauptmarkt Square which is flanked by the Gothic Church of our Lady and the spectacular “Beautiful Fountain”, before boarding our coach to see the famous sights that are further afield. Highlights include the Imperial Castle which sits atop a rocky promontory above the city and which was one of the most important fortified imperial palaces of the Old Holy Roman Empire and also the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds & newly opened Documentation Centre which examines various historical aspects of Nazi Germany. After lunch, we can visit the German Rail Museum (closed Mondays) with its main exhibition charting almost two centuries of rail history, including Germany’s oldest railway carriage from 1835, before returning to our hotel.

Day 6 Departure
After breakfast this morning, we say farewell to our hotel and return to our local area.
