Scenic Settle To Carlisle Railway

This five day adventure starts in Lancashire, staying at one of our most popular hotels, the Hallmark Leyland, for two nights and includes a day in the Victorian seaside resort of Southport. As we travel to Scotland part of our journey is via the Settle to Carlisle railway, on one of England’s most scenic railway lines. We stay in Dumfries for two nights and visit the spectacular Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens with a scrumptious afternoon tea included.
Day 1 Arrival in Leyland
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Southport 37 mile round trip
Today, we will relax on one of Southport’s beautiful sandy beaches. Southport Beach itself boasts some of the most amazing views of the Lancashire coastline as well as the Victorian Grade II Listed iron pier, the second longest in the country. We can take a trip on the Pier Tram to the Pier Pavilion with itsantique penny slot machines and licensed café or visit Lord Street, with its Victorian canopies over interesting shops, cafés and restaurants.

Day 3 Settle to Carlisle Railway Journey 150 miles
Today we travel to Settle to board the morning departure for a journey on the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway line. We travel through 72 miles of unspoilt countryside enjoying the breathtaking scenery. This journey is arguably the most scenic of any English railway as we pass through 14 tunnels and over 20 viaducts including the Ribblehead Viaduct which has 24 arches that stand 104 feet above the moor. We arrive in Carlisle where we will have free time for lunch before we continue our journey to our next hotel in Dumfries.

Day 4 Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens 38 mile round trip
After a leisurely breakfast we visit Drumlanrig Castle a fine example of late 17th century Renaissance architecture, constructed from distinctive pink sandstone (the ‘Pink Palace’). We will enjoy a guided tour of the castle and view the grand reception rooms, magnificent staircases, ornate period features and cosy parlours which provide an intimate taste of life through the centuries. We visit the castle tea rooms where afternoon tea is served. This afternoon we will have free time to explore the stunning gardens before we return to the hotel.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast we depart our hotel and begin our journey home.
