Follow the 'Walk of Fame' to discover some of the unsung heroes of Tower Bridge. Uncover stories and soak in the atmosphere of the working Bridge in one of London's true hidden gems: the magnificent Victorian Engine Rooms, where authentic machinery which once lifted Tower Bridge’s 1000 tonne bascules fills the space with whirring wheels and moving pistons. These beautifully maintained coal-driven engines are sure to amaze.

Tower of London
Built by William the Conqueror to strike awe into the hearts of Londoners, the Tower of London is infamous as a prison – but has also served as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, a public record office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of England.

The Tower has housed many well-known prisoners, including Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh, Anne Askew, Elizabeth Throckmorton, and the two princes, the sons of King Edward IV. After Edward's dead in 1483 the children were locked in the Bloody Tower by their uncle, who would later ascend the throne as King Richard III. Guy Fawkes was also imprisoned and tortured here following the discovery of the murderous Gunpowder Plot, and Anne Boleyn was held and executed at the order of her husband Henry VIII.

Prisoners were guarded and looked after by the Yeoman Warders, whose main task today – in addition to navigating thronging crowds of tourists – is to guard the Crown Jewels, the largest set of regalia in the world. The Jewels are valued anywhere between 3 and 5 billion pounds!

Coins and Kings: The Royal Mint at the Tower of London exhibition
The Tower was also used as the home of the Royal Mint, between c1279 and 1812 and now features the ‘Coins and Kings: The Royal Mint at the Tower of London’ exhibition which explores the story of the Mint during the years it was based there. With historical artefacts and interactive displays, visitors can explore what life was like for the people of Mint Street, who mass-produced coins for the nation. The exhibition tells the stories of famous monarchs who reigned over the Mint, and how their coins reflected the power struggles and politics of their time.

Coins and Kings also reveals surprising stories of the Mint, including Isaac Newton’s efforts to rid London of counterfeiters, Elizabeth I’s restoration of the currency after her father’s disastrous meddling, and Charles II's rejection of Commonwealth money. It explores how medieval coins were made, how technology revolutionised the Mint, and why the Mint eventually moved out of the Tower in the reign of George III after a huge financial crisis.
