WWI Flanders Fields & WWII Operation Dynamo

Our new suggested itinerary is based in Lille and ideally located to visit key battlefield sites from World War I and World War II. On day two of the tour we visit the famous Belgian town of Ypres and the surrounding World War I Battlefields and on day three we visit the French port town of Dunkirk, home of one of the most memorable events in World War II, Operation Dynamo.
Day 1 Arrival
Today, we cross the Channel and make our way to Lille.

Day 2 Ypres & Passchendaele 90km/56 mile round trip
Our excursion today is to the famous town of Ypres and its surrounding battlefields. This morning, we enjoy a walking tour of Ypres which will provide us with an intriguing insight into the renewal of the town after WWI. This tour finishes at the excellent ‘In Flanders Fields’ Museum, which commemorates the history of the Great War using modern technology. Our afternoon is spent visiting the world’s largest British and Commonwealth cemetery, Tyne Cot, which remembers almost 12,000 soldiers, many of whom are unidentified. We then travel the short distance to the Memorial Museum of Passchendaele which tells the history of the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, with a blend of exhibits and trench reconstruction.

Please note, the trenches are difficult to access and a shorter route is provided with a wheelchair accessible path so that people who are less mobile or who use a wheelchair can view the trenches from above.

Day 3 Dunkirk 166km/104 mile round trip
Today we will travel to Dunkirk, a town steeped in history. On arrival, we meet our step-on guide for a 2 hour tour to hear about one of the most memorable events in wartime history: Operation Dynamo. During our tour we discover how, from 26 May to 4 June 1940, Dunkirk was the site of the largest evacuation effort in military history, when 338,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated on a flotilla of more than 800 ships. As we travel from Dunkirk to Zuydcoote, our guide will introduce us to key sites and we will also see the film locations of the new movie ‘Dunkirk’ directed by Christopher Nolan, due to be released in July 2017. We will visit a number of important sites including the evacuation beaches, East Mole (the port where most of the soldiers were evacuated), an impressive bunker built by the Germans during the occupation, the British Memorial that commemorates the memory of the 4,528 soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who died during 1940 and who have no known grave, and the cemetery which is home to the graves of 810 British soldiers. We will then see the Zuydcoote Maritime Hospital where more than 20,000 injured soldiers were treated during the Battle of Dunkirk and finally, the Shipwrecks of Dunkirk (tides permitting). Following our fascinating tour we return to Dunkirk and have free time to take lunch at leisure. In the afternoon, we visit the Dunkirk War Museum which has undergone extensive refurbishment, having been extended during 2017. The museum is located in the fortifications that were built in 1874 to reinforce France’s coastal defence and it also served as the headquarters for the French and Allied forces during the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo.

Day 4 Departure
After breakfast, we board our coach for the journey home.
