A Sparkling Sunday Break in Durham

Durham is the perfect choice for a city break no matter what the weather. Our hotel is situated just a short walk from the city centre, the UNESCO World Heritage Site formed by the famous Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle. For that ‘something special’ we have packaged in an indulgent sparkling afternoon tea in the Georgian Tearooms at Crook Hall & Gardens.
Day 1 Arrival
Departing our local area, we arrive at our hotel which overlooks the River Wear with time to settle in prior to dinner and perhaps take a short walk to Durham city centre to discover a host of independent boutiques and craft shops which jostle for attention alongside high street favourites.

Day 2 Durham & Crook Hall & Gardens with Afternoon Tea
We have the morning at leisure to explore the winding cobbled streets and dramatic architecture of Durham’s compact city centre. We can experience one of the finest surviving examples of Romanesque architecture at the beautiful Durham Cathedral, which has been crowned BBC Countryfile Magazine’s Heritage Site of the Year. Not to be missed is its new Open Treasure experience which gives visitors access to previously hidden spaces within the Cathedral’s magnificent Claustral buildings.

In the afternoon we visit Crook Hall and Gardens which is situated just a short distance from Durham City’s bustling market place. The medieval manor house was built in the 13th century and is one of the oldest inhabited houses in Durham City.

We can enjoy the gardens and the interior of the house before being shown to our tables for a sparkling afternoon tea in the Georgian Tea Room on the first floor. We will be greeted by a roaring fire and treated to a glass of sparkling wine or elderflower fizz before our choice of tea or coffee and a 3 tiered stand of delicious homemade goodies is brought to our beautifully set table. Once we have indulged in dainty sandwiches, scones from the Aga and a selection of delectable cakes we will begin our journey home.
