Art, Architecture & Arnhem’s 75th Anniversary

2019 is a special year to visit Arnhem as it commemorates the 75th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden’s daring attempt to bring WWII to an early end. The camaraderie between the town and the British can still be felt today in this lovely area of Holland which offers something for everyone.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Netherlands Open Air Museum & Arnhem
After breakfast, we travel the short distance to the fascinating Netherlands Open Air Museum where we enjoy a 1 hour guided tour. Displaying a slice of Dutch life and history, this open air park is the setting for over 80 original historic buildings including houses, farmhouses and mills where we can meet friendly farmers, the blacksmith, fisherman and miller who provide us with an interactive history of the country and its heritage. We can travel on an historic tram around the park and enjoy lunch at the Museum café, before we return to Arnhem, with free time to explore the quaint shopping streets or perhaps visit the ‘Bridge Too Far’, all within walking distance of our hotel.

Day 3 ‘A Bridge Too Far’ & Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’ 75th Anniversary
This morning, we enjoy a step-on guided tour and learn of events that took place in Arnhem during WWII, focusing on Operation Market Garden in 1944, when British and Polish troops were parachuted behind enemy lines in an attempt to bring the war to an early end. We have the opportunity to view the John Frost Bridge, named after the British commanding officer and also known as the ‘Bridge Too Far’. We then visit the Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’, a superb and very moving museum dedicated to the 1944 Battle of Arnhem story, housed within the impressive 19th century Villa Hartenstein (former headquarters of the British command during the Battle). We also visit the Oosterbeek War Cemetery where nearly 2,000 Allied servicemen are buried. In the afternoon we take a scenic drive through nearby Hoge Veluwe National Park, a rugged nature reserve with red deer and wild boar that roam the heath, woodland and dunes. We take time to visit the Kröller Müller Museum and Sculpture Garden, which houses the second largest collection of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh after the Van Gogh Museum.

Day 4 Departure
We begin our journey home today.
