Castles & Gardens of Scotland 2020

Explore the majestic lowlands and lochs of southwest Ayrshire on this new tour, based in the North West Castle Hotel in Stranraer. Our journey takes in mulls, lochs, castles and forests as we take in stunning sights and scenery typical of the area, as well as ‘Brig ‘o Doon’ at the Robert Burns museum.

Rob says…
”The North West Castle is a rare find, positioned on the tip of the south west it affords brand new touring options for your passengers while retaining the splendour, charm and excellent meals that made the McMillan Hotels famous.”
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Logan Botanic Gardens & Castle Kennedy Gardens
We start the day with sightseeing in Portpatrick, a pretty picture-postcard harbour on the Mull of Galloway with superb views over the Solway Firth to Ireland and the Isle of Man. After a short stop, we head to Logan Botanic Gardens, Scotland’s most exotic garden where we explore plant treasures from South/Central America, Southern Africa and Australasia. In the afternoon we visit delightful Castle Kennedy Gardens, one of Scotland’s hidden treasures, and home to a historical collection of Rhododendrons, Championship Trees and rare species set in 75 acres around the ruins of Castle Kennedy surrounded by the White and Black Lochs.

Day 3 Robert Burns Birthplace Museum & Culzean Castle
This morning we enjoy a scenic sightseeing drive hugging Loch Ryan’s eastern shore then up the Firth of Clyde coast before cutting inland to Robert Burns Birthplace Museum where we learn more about Scotland’s favourite son and his unique writing. In the afternoon we visit Culzean Castle, cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. Gardens, beaches, formal gardens and a stunning cliff top setting are sure to impress even before we set foot inside where we will find a magnificent oval staircase and a fine collection of paintings.

Day 4 Galloway Forest Park & Threave Garden & Estate
This morning we journey inland to Galloway Forest Park for a short stop at the Red Deer Range – look out for the Red and Roe deer and the mighty birds of prey patrolling the skies. We continue on to Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre, overlooking the loch of the same name, the perfect spot for refreshment. As we take in the lovely views over lunch (not included), keep an eye out for waterfowl for whom this is a haven. The afternoon is set aside to explore Threave Garden & Estate, at the heart of which stands the impressive Baronial Style house, designed in 1871. The garden itself is divided into smaller segments such as a rose garden, walled garden and rockery, which combined with the overall estate, make for a quite magnificent landscape. Depending on time and weather, we may be able to stop at the artist’s village of Kirkcudbright en route back to our hotel.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
