Charming Cheshire & Historic Chester

We have two beautiful 4 star hotels in Cheshire that are perfect for discovering the stunning attractions that this remarkable county has to offer. All you need to decide is whether you fancy a countryside retreat or a central Chester historical gem as your base!
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel with tim to settle in prior to dinner.

Day 2 Tatton Park & Knutsford 26/63 mile round trip
Today, we will visit Tatton Park, set in 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland that is home to two herds of deer. We will be accompanied on an entertaining tour by the ‘respected butler’, Mr. New, who will explain how he goes about his daily tasks, and the unflappable Mrs. Cork the ‘house keeper’. (Please note that this tour takes place on two levels of the Mansion.) After our fascinating insight, we are free to stroll around the spectacular 50-acre garden and its walled kitchen gardens, famed Japanese Garden, Italian garden, Lady Egerton’s rose garden and the arboretum. We will then visit Knutsford, renowned for its array of restaurants, bars and fine food purveyors. This compact town was also the inspiration and setting for Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford. Elizabeth Gaskell lived in Knutsford for many years and is buried in the churchyard of Brook Street Unitarian Chapel and we can learn more about the ‘real’ Cranford during our visit to the Knutsford Heritage Centre.

Day 3 Chester 41/0 mile round trip
Today, we will explore the beautiful, historic city of Chester which has the most complete city walls and largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, plus a 1000 year old cathedral and 700 year old unique shopping rows. There are lots of attractions to keep us entertained during our day at leisure. We can enjoy a 30 minute river cruise on the River Dee, before taking a self-guided tour of the Medieval Cathedral and discovering the extraordinary story behind its imposing walls. Alternatively we can enjoy a spot of retail therapy or lunch
at one of the many lovely restaurants!

Day 4 The Lion Salt Works & Anderton Boat Lift 23/50 mile round trip
This morning, we will visit The Lion Salt Works, a new museum housed within a restored historic open-pan salt making site. We will go on a journey of discovery through a series of original buildings housing fascinating exhibits that bring life as a salt-miner to life! At lunchtime, we will visit the historic Anderton Boat Lift which provides a 50-foot vertical link between two navigable waterways: the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. We may choose to enjoy lunch in the coffee shop before experiencing the lift first hand in a
glass covered boat on a 30 minute journey.

Day 5 Departure
This morning we leave our hotel and make our way back home.
