Chester, a Roman City

We explore 2,000 years of history in bewitching Chester, with its complete city walls, largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain and 1,000 year old cathedral. Further afield, we discover Tatton Park, Knutsford, Ness Botanic Gardens and Port Sunlight.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Chester & River Dee Cruise
Today, we explore the historic city of Chester which has the most complete city walls and largest Roman Amphitheatre in Britain, plus a 1000 year old cathedral and 700 year old unique shopping rows. We explore at leisure before enjoying a 30 minute river cruise on the River Dee, after which we take a self-guided tour of medieval Chester Cathedral.

Day 3 Tatton Park & Knutsford
Today, we visit Tatton Park, set in 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland. We will be accompanied on an entertaining tour by the Edwardian servants, looking at life “below stairs” as they go about their daily tasks. We have free time to stroll around the spectacular 50 acre gardens before making our way to Knutsford, the inspiration and setting for Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford. Elizabeth Gaskell lived in Knutsford for many years and is buried in the churchyard and we can learn more about the ‘real’ Cranford during our visit to the Knutsford Heritage Centre.

Day 4 Port Sunlight & Ness Botanic Gardens
This morning, we visit Port Sunlight, the village that William Hesketh Lever built for his Sunlight Soap factory workers in 1888. Here, we meet our step-on guide for a 1 hour tour around the village, after which we visit the Port Sunlight Museum, the Lady Lever Art Gallery and tea room before we make our way to Ness Botanic Gardens, where 64 acres of spectacular gardens offer stunning views over the dramatic Dee Estuary.
