CHESTER ZOO
Starting with some of the mightiest residents, the Asiatic lion exhibit is home to a pride of endangered Asiatic lions, while Spirit of the Jaguar brings you face to face with – you guessed it! – jaguars. See Bornean orangutans in the tropical Realm of the Red Ape, along with birds, lizards and even the world’s longest snake! Nearby, you’ll find Congo buffalo, chimpanzees, otters, red river hogs and okapi, as well as the Tropical Realm. Listen out for the calming sounds of a running waterfall and beautiful birdsong as you discover hundreds of reptiles, amphibians and free flight birds here.
Sticking with the tropical theme, you can explore the amazing tropical environments of six South East Asian islands in the fabulous Islands area, which is home to Sumatran tigers, banteng, Malayan tapir, sun bears, Visayan warty pigs and tree kangaroos. This is also where you’ll find the hot and humid Monsoon Forest complete with Sumatran orangutans and gibbons, the Asian giant tortoise and some quirky creatures like the tentacled snake and vampire crabs! You can always cool off with a cruise on the lovely Lazy River Boat Trip while you’re on the Islands!
The new, walk-through Latin American Wetland Aviary allows you to wander among some of South and Central America’s most colourful bird species, including the striking saffron finch, scarlet ibis and everyone’s favourite bright flamingos. There are plenty more colourful creatures to spot in the Aquarium, with seahorses, brittle stars, blind fish, pipefish, anemone and clownfish among the aquatic species – and don’t miss the penguins next door either!
Take a trip to Madagascar and stroll through the walk-through lemur habitat. Experience bright and beautiful butterflies fluttering around you in Butterfly Journey. And get close to the largest lizard in the world, the Komodo dragon, in the Dragons in Danger exhibit – which is also home to the peculiarly-named Mountain chicken frog! Further roams around the park will bring you up close and personal with meerkats, black rhinos, aardvarks, Andean bears, red pandas, bats, tapir, capybara, giant anteaters, deer, monkeys, zebras, camels, cheetahs and elephants… to name just a few!
