The Garden Highlights...

The Hive
Where science and beauty come together, where visitors can explore the journey of the British bee through UK innovation and design. A fabulous open-air structure standing at 17 metres tall and weighing in at 40 tonnes, The Hive encapsulates the story of the honey bee and the important role of pollination in feeding the planet, through an immersive sound and visual experience. There are 1,000 LED lights dotted around its core which glow and fade, while a unique soundtrack hums in response to the activity of real bees in a beehive behind the scenes at Kew. Just step inside and discover the secret life of bees!

Davies Alpine House
Opened in 2006, the Davies Alpine House was the first new glasshouse to be commissioned for two decades and is located at the north end of the Rock Garden.

Things to look out for…
Throughout the year, the house displays a wide range of campanulas, dianthus, small ferns, small lavenders, primulas, saxifrage, thymes, tulips and verbascums along with lesser-known species, one of the glasshouse’s rarest occupants is the Chilean blue crocus. It has scented, cobalt-blue flowers with white centres. Described in 1862, it was only known to grow in the range of hills surrounding Santiago, Chile, at about 3,000m. Regarded as extinct in the wild from the 1950s onwards, it was rediscovered in 2001 on private land south of Santiago.

Treetop Walkway
Opened in 2008, the Treetop Walkway stands in the Arboretum, between the Temperate House and the lake. At 18-metres high, it enables visitors to walk around the crowns of lime, sweet chestnut and oak trees. Supported by rusted steel columns that blend in with the natural environment, it provides opportunities for inspecting birds, insects, lichen and fungi at close quarters, as well as seeing blossom emerging and seed pods bursting open in spring.

Kew Palace & the Royal Kitchens
An intimate palace that brings to life the joys and sorrows of George III and his family, from his children’s lives to his own hardships. Fascinating personal artefacts and art works adorn the authentically re-created Georgian rooms in which the stories unfold.

Next to the Palace, the Georgian royal kitchen remains miraculously preserved, 200 years after it was last used. Evoking life in the royal kitchen’s on the 6 February 1789, when George III was given back his knife and fork, after his first episode of ‘madness’.

Starting with the little kitchen garden to the rear, gives a flavour of what the Georgian kitchen gardens were like. Once inside, there are four preparation rooms where the bread was baked, the fish and meat stored, vegetables washed, and the lead-lined sink where the scullery boys would spend hours scouring pots and pans with sand. But the most impressive room in the building is the Great Kitchen, a double-height room space, complete with roasting range, charcoal grill and pastry oven.

Orchid Festival 2018 - see tour details here
