Suggested Itinerary by Coach

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel with time to settle in before dinner.

Day 2 Avignon Driver’s Day Off
We spend today at leisure, allowing us time to explore the beautiful city of Avignon, set on the banks of the Rhône with dramatic views of its 800 year old medieval ramparts surrounding the magnificent Palais des Papes. The famous Pont d’Avignon of nursery rhyme fame sits majestically half way across the Rhône and the city teems with cobbled streets, quaint boutiques and leafy squares. We recommend a guided tour of the Palais des Papes or, for those who like to take things at a slower pace, there is the option of a 1 hour afternoon boat cruise on the Rhône to see the majestic city from the river.

Day 3 Châteauneuf du Pape & Orange 60km/37 mile round trip
This morning, we make our way to Châteauneuf du Pape.  Most famous for its fine wine, we can explore the narrow, twisting, medieval lanes and stop at the Place de la Fontaine before discovering the art galleries, artisan workshops and of course, numerous wine tasting cellars. The Musée du Vin, displaying the history of Châteauneuf du Pape wine and its vineyards along with ancient tools and presses, is worth a visit as are the Romanesque church and the village’s two chapels. Whilst here, we enjoy wine tasting at the Cave du Verger des Papes vineyard, before we head to the Roman town of Orange.  Here, we can spend time discovering its ancient historic centre, picturesque squares, cathedral, museum and famous Roman Theatre and Triumphal Arch.

Day 4 Pont du Gard & Nîmes 89km/55 mile round trip
This morning, we visit Pont du Gard, home of the ancient Roman aqueduct that crosses the Gardon River near the town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard. We visit the Pont du Gard Museum, a museum at the crossroads of history and technology. The museum traces the history of the Roman aqueduct with models, virtual reconstructions, multimedia screens and sounds drawing visitors into the ancient Roman world. In the afternoon, we visit the attractive town of Nîmes which was an important outpost of the Roman empire and is full of well-preserved Roman monuments.  We can spend time at leisure or there is the option for a guided walking tour.

Day 5 Provençal Tour 107km/66 mile round trip
This morning, we visit typical Provençal villages where we can experience a slower pace of life. We start by visiting L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, famous for its markets, antiques, water wheels and canals.  We can meander through the narrow lanes filled with market stalls (market held each Thursday and Sunday) before travelling to the charming village of St Remy de Provence for lunch, with its pretty squares and fountains. In the afternoon, we visit the extraordinary Carrières Lumières near les Baux to escape the heat of the afternoon. This former quarry presents art-based multimedia shows, projecting images of famous paintings set to music - a true spectacle!  After our illuminating visit, we make our way back to Avignon.

Day 6 Departure
Today, we must say farewell to Avignon and make our way home.
