Dorset’s Glorious Gardens & Stately Homes

Our new packaged tour features the glorious gardens of Athelhampton House as well as Forde Abbey and Sherborne Castle, where we also enjoy guided tours. With visits to Dorchester, Lyme Regis and Sherborne, this tour discovers the best of Thomas Hardy’s Dorset landscape.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Athelhampton House & Dorchester
We spend this morning at the lovely Athelhampton House and Gardens, where we enjoy a 15 minute introductory talk before exploring at our own pace. Privately owned and still lived in, the house is a magnificent example of early Tudor architecture and has fascinating interiors as well as beautiful Grade 1 listed gardens. Garden features include the famous 30ft high pyramid shaped yew trees, which dominate the Great Court. We spend the afternoon in Dorchester, the vibrant county town of Dorset, discovering its connection to Thomas Hardy and exploring its shops and interesting museums which
include the Dorset County Museum and the Keep Military Museum.

Day 3 Forde Abbey & Lyme Regis
This morning, we enjoy a private guided tour of the house at Forde Abbey (tours are conducted when the house is not open to the general public so should be started no later than 11 am), where we learn about its history, followed by free time to stroll around the beautiful gardens and enjoy lunch in the tearoom. In the afternoon, we travel along Dorset’s Jurassic coast and visit Lyme Regis, the historic unspoiled seaside resort and fishing port on the world famous Cobb harbour.

Day 4 Sherborne Castle & Sherborne
Today, we enjoy a private guided tour of Sherborne Castle (starting between 10 am and
10.30 am) where we see its magnificent state rooms, Tudor kitchen, relics from the Civil War and archaeological treasures in the castle’s cellars. We also have time at leisure to explore the 30 acres of tranquil gardens set in a stunning ‘Capability’ Brown landscape, affording spectacular views of 1,000 acres of parkland. In the afternoon, we spend time
in the medieval market town of Sherborne, one of the most beautiful in England, whose attractions include Sherborne Abbey and Sherborne Museum.
