Edinburgh & The Beautiful Borders

This Scottish Borders holiday incorporates visits to New Lanark World Heritage site, Floors castle, Jedburgh, Abottsford House and Edinburgh. One of the highlights of the tour is a scenic rail journey from Edinburgh through the beautiful Borders.
Day 1 Arrival in Eddleston
We arrive at our hotel and settle in prior to dinner.

Day 2 Floors Castle, Jedburgh & Abbotsford House 94 mile round trip
This morning we visit the impressive Floors Castle, the largest inhabited Castle in Scotland, home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe and their family. The Castle contains Chinese and European porcelain collections and many other fine works of art and we can enjoy discovering the castle’s history and treasures. We will then travel the short distance to the historic town of Jedburgh, where we will have time to visit the town’s attractions such as Mary Queen of Scots’ House or Jedburgh Abbey, dating back to around 1138. We finish our day at Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott and one of Scotland’s most fascinating places. Created almost 200 years ago, Abbotsford was the culmination of Scott’s creative ambitions as a writer and the fount of his inspiration. We explore the historic house and its treasure trove of intriguing objects and unusual artefacts which inspired Scott’s greatest poems and novels.

Day 3 New Lanark World Heritage Site & Peebles 70 mile round trip
Today we visit the award winning New Lanark World Heritage Site and discover the fascinating history of the impressive cotton mill village and the life and times of mill manager and social pioneer Robert Owen. As we explore the village it is easy to imagine how people lived and worked in Owen’s time. We will visit the ‘Annie McLeod Experience’, see working textile machinery, the Millworkers’ House, Robert Owen’s House, the Roof Garden, the Village Store and the Robert Owen’s School. There is time for lunch at the Heritage site before we return to Peebles where we will get the chance to wander around the fine buildings and shops before we return to our hotel in the afternoon.

Day 4 Edinburgh & Borders Railway 80 mile round trip
Our morning begins at the stunning capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, with our first visit being to the magnificent Edinburgh Castle. Perched atop an extinct volcano, the 12th century castle overlooks the city and guards many of the nation’s treasures, including the Scottish Crown Jewels. We will explore the Argyle Battery and Tower, the military prisons, the Royal Scots and Royal Dragoon Guards Museum, the Governor’s House, St Margaret’s Chapel and the National War Museum. On leaving the castle, we will take a short stroll onto the Royal Mile to visit The Scotch Whisky experience. We can take a ride on a barrel as we learn about the production of Scotch whisky. We will be introduced to the aromas of whisky and will, of course, be able to sample a wee dram! We complete our tour by viewing the world’s largest Scotch whisky collection comprising of 3,384 bottles, making it a priceless record of whisky history! We will then have free time in Edinburgh before we meet up with our coach which will transfer us to Waverley train station where we will complete our day with a one hour scenic train journey to Tweedbank on the Borders Railway, taking us through former mining towns, wide open farmland and the lush valleys that the Borders are famous for.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast we depart our hotel and begin our journey home.
