On this tour, we explore the historic city of Edinburgh and discover attractions in the beautiful Scottish Borders, including the New Lanark World Heritage Site, Thirlestane Castle, Melrose Abbey and Abbotsford House, with one of the highlights being a scenic rail journey through the stunning landscapes of the beautiful Borders.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Thirlestane Castle, Melrose Abbey & Abbotsford
This morning we enjoy a guided tour of majestic Thirlestane Castle, one of the oldest and finest castles in Scotland with a beautiful fairytale exterior. Containing many fascinating details, we discover its grand state rooms, decorative ceilings, fine furnishings and family treasures. In the afternoon, we visit the magnificent ruin of Melrose Abbey, the final resting place of Robert the Bruce. We finish our day at Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott and one of Scotland’s most fascinating attractions.

Day 3 New Lanark World Heritage Site
Today we visit the award winning New Lanark World Heritage Site and discover the fascinating history of this impressive cotton mill village. We visit the ‘Annie McLeod Experience’, see working textile machinery, the Millworkers’ House, Robert Owen’s House, the Roof Garden, the Village Store and Robert Owen’s School. We have free time for lunch here before returning to Peebles, where we spend time at leisure.

Day 4 Edinburgh & Borders Railway
We spend today in Edinburgh, starting with a visit to magnificent Edinburgh Castle. Perched atop an extinct volcano, the 12th century castle overlooks the city and guards many of the nation’s treasures, including the Scottish Crown Jewels. On leaving the castle, we take a short stroll to the Royal Mile to visit The Scotch Whisky Experience, where we take a ride on a barrel as we learn about the production of Scotch whisky, followed by a wee dram and a viewing of the world’s largest Scotch whisky collection comprising 3,384 bottles! We then have free time in Edinburgh before we make our way by coach to Waverley train station from where we enjoy a 1 hour scenic train journey to Tweedbank on the Borders Railway.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
