Used as Walt Disney’s inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle, the mock-medieval architecture and stunning views have to be seen, to be believed. After lunch, we visit King Ludwig’s nearby childhood home, Hohenschwangau Castle with its richly furnished interiors which exude a more ‘lived in’ feel. We will then spend the rest of our day exploring the beautiful monastic town of Füssen.

Please note, payment for entry for both castlesis cash on the day and pre-booking is required. Entrance to both castles involves an uphill walk (there are buses or horses and carriages available at an extra charge) and there are steps within both castles.

Day 4 Oberammergau, Linderhof Palace & Ettal Abbey
Today, we take a short drive to the Bavarian village of Oberammergau where we enjoy free time to explore the town made famous by the Passion Play. Our next destination is King Ludwig’s Linderhof Palace, with its intricately ornate interiors. Finally, we will visit Ettal Abbey, a stunning Benedictine Monastery whose inhabitants are known for their beer and cheese production skills, both of which can be bought in the adjoining shop.

Day 5 The Zugspitze & Garmisch
This morning, we travel to the pretty town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, formerly the home of the composer, Richard Strauss. We will board a train bound for the summit of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, which straddles the border between Germany and Austria.
