Fine Wine & Great Châteaux of the Loire

With beautiful châteaux, fine wines and stunning scenery, the Loire Valley is a spectacular destination. Staying in the heart of the Valley, in Saumur, our packaged tour makes the most of this fabulous region with visits to three fabulous châteaux and the magnificent Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud monastery. We also indulge in a wine tasting and spend some time exploring the delightful town of Tours.

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 Tours & Château de Villandry
Today we travel to the nearby capital of the region, Tours, where we have free time at leisure to explore this delightful town. With its impressive old town by the river, beautiful, tree-lined squares with half-timbered houses, narrow winding streets, markets, churches and excellent shopping, there is plenty to enjoy. In the afternoon we drive the short distance from Tours to the beautiful gardens in the grounds of Château de Villandry. Whilst the château itself is impressive, Villandry is set apart by its beautiful gardens created at the beginning of the 20th century, with a particular highlight being the varied sections of the Renaissance Garden within this World Heritage Site.
Day 3 Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, Wine Tasting & Saumur
This morning we visit the magnificent Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, which was founded more than 1,000 years ago. This sprawling site, which was governed by an abbess and run by nuns, included an abbey church, cloisters, chapter house and kitchens, and is the final resting place of the Plantagenet Kings of England, Henry II and Richard the Lionheart. In the afternoon we stop for a wine tasting at the Gratien Meyer vineyard before driving to Saumur, where we can wander through the historic streets overlooked by the imposing Château de Saumur, which rises high above the town.
Day 4 Château d’Ussé & Château d’Azay-le-Rideau
Today we visit two charming châteaux located to the east of Saumur. Our first visit is to Château d’Ussé, a romantic, multi-turreted castle built in white stone, which is believed to be the inspiration for the castle in the story of Sleeping Beauty. In the afternoon we drive to Château d’Azay-le-Rideau to visit this fairy-tale Renaissance château that stands on an island in the Indre river. Surrounded by water on all sides, this beautiful castle appears to float in its own reflected image.
Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
