Christmas in Germany simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit to a traditional Christmas Market, and the Harz Mountains region has some of the country’s most picturesque, convivial offerings. Savour the tastes of glühwein & baked treats, bask in the wonderful aromas and enjoy the warm glow of lights while wandering through charming streets & medieval alleys. Prost!
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel with time to spare before dinner.

Day 2: Harz Mountains Christmas Markets
We begin our day with a visit to Wernigerode, where we can enjoy the town’s beautiful Christmas market and impressive castle. If we have time (and a head for heights!), we can board the Brockenbahn for a steam trip to the summit of the Brocken, the Harz region’s highest mountain. In the afternoon, we make the short journey to Quedlinburg, to roam the cobbled streets of this 1,000-year-old town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – filled with snow-dusted stalls & Christmas cheer.

Day 3: Hamelin & Hanover
Today, we journey to the legendary town of Hamelin (or Hameln, in German), where we meet a very special character for the next leg of our tour – the Pied Piper! We are taken on a magical guided tour of the town and its market, discovering the legend of Hamelin along the way. We return to Hanover this afternoon, with free time at leisure to enjoy the variety of Christmas markets, excellent shopping facilities and numerous bars & restaurants. We could choose to visit Herrenhausen Palace, a 17th century former royal summer residence of the House of Hanover - and the birthplace of King George II.

Day 4: Departure
Today, we say “auf wiedersehen” to Germany and travel home.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS - ENTRY IS FREE OF CHARGE

Wernigerode

The Wernigerode Christmas Market takes place in one of the Harz region’s most picturesque settings. Overlooked by the 15th century town hall and surrounded by lovingly restored half-timbered houses, a number of stalls offer a variety of traditional food and drink as well as local craftsmanship in the town’s market square.

The aromas of roasted almonds and glühwein are a hallmark of Christmas in Wernigerode, and the market’s centrepiece is a 10m tall Christmas tree lighting up the square right in front of the town hall. Above the town towers the Castle, dating back to the 12th century which is now open as a museum with rooms displaying the furniture of the last occupant, Earl Stolberg-Wernigerode, and an impressive dinner hall.

Dates 29 NOV - 21 DEC 2019 (estimated on 2018, TBC)
Sun to Thu 10am-8pm      Fri to Sat 10am-9pm

Quedlinburg

The magic of Christmas finds its way into the 1000 year old UNESCO world heritage town. Angels flit through the festively decorated alleyways with their thousand year old cobbles – the Christmas market has arrived in front of the town hall. Discover peculiarities hidden behind walls at “Advent in the courtyards”: on the three weekends leading up to Christmas the historical houses in the centre open the gates to their inner courtyards and offer up precious objects and rarities.

Advent is celebrated in true style in Quedlinburg. The sounds of seasonal music and organ recitals ring out from the churches. Christmas music can also be heard every day on Schlossberg hill, when a new half-timbered house opens its door to become part of the Quedlinburg Advent Calendar. No less fascinating is the 'Magic of Christmas', when shop windows across the town display a lovingly assembled collection of old-fashioned dolls' kitchens and toy grocery stores. Children streak through the fairytale wood. No one can get away from the magic of Christmas in Quedlinburg.

Hamelin

The fairy tale Hamelin Christmas Market features over 70 festively decorated wooden huts; all clustered around the Wedding House, the Market Church and around the picturesque old quarter with its lovingly restored timber-framed houses and grand Weser Renaissance buildings.

Highlights of Hamelin's Christmas market are the Nativity scene, which has real animals to stroke, a Christmas pyramid and an enormous advent calendar on the Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House).

Hanover

Hanover's main Christmas market takes place at the historical old quarter, around the Market Church and on the Ballhofplatz, where 150 charming stalls sell tree decorations, wooden toys & lovingly produced craftwork.

In the city’s historical Christmas village, you will find a wide range of medieval glassblowers, skilled potters & traditional candle makers. And a Finnish Christmas Market experience takes place on Ballhofplatz square, where you can buy and taste all the delights from Father Christmas’ home country – including specialities such as “Flammlachs” (grilled fish) and “Glögi” (mulled wine).

Dates 27 NOV - 21 DEC 2019 (estimated on 2018, TBC)
27 Nov from 4pm then 11am-9pm daily

Optional Extra: Add a ride on the Brockenbahn

Ride through the snow-covered countryside in a historical carriage pulled by a steam engine - and expect some pleasant surprises along the way!

Opened in 1898, the 1142m-high Brockenbahn (Brocken railway) offers a stunning panorama of the Harz National Park and a fantastic view of the plains, setting off from the town of Wernigerode. The line’s steam engines make the trip several times a day and, as a purely adhesion railway, they do it without cog wheels or additional aids. The summit of the Brocken is the highest point in the Harz Mountains, and the station at the end of the line is the highest narrow guage adhesion railway station in Germany.
