Footsteps Along the Camino de Santiago

Northern Spain has been welcoming travellers since medieval times when Santiago de Compostela was established. Now pilgrims still make their way to this scenic town. You can follow this holy route or ‘Camino’ as the Spaniards say, from the comfort of your coach. You can admire the scenery lined with natural beauty and diverse architecture before exploring the delightful towns along the Bay of Biscay. Roman ruins mingle with Galician palaces and the beauty of this unspoiled region is magnified by its peace and tranquillity.
Day 1 Plymouth/Portsmouth to Santander
Today, we will make our way to Plymouth/ Portsmouth for our overnight sailing to Santander.

Day 2 Arrival
We will make our way to León and arrive at our hotel and have a late dinner.

Day 3 León
Today we will take a guided tour of León which celebrates the best of Spanish drama and culture. Only Spain could make a bank interesting and Gaudi’s Casa Botines is testament to this, infused with a medieval air and numerous neo-Gothic characteristics. However, it is the 10th century cathedral with imposing towers and gothic influences that truly astounds.

Day 4 O Grove via Ponferrada
Today we make our way from León to O Grove via the Roman citadel of Ponferrada which is the last major town before Santiago de Compostela. To learn more about its history there’s the Museum of El Bierzo housed in the former prison. We will also visit the 12th century polygonal castle Castillo de los Templarios which acted as a haven on the route for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Day 5 Santiago de Compostela
This morning we follow in the footsteps of millions of pilgrims as we arrive in Santiago de Compostela. We enjoy a guided walking tour of Santiago de Compostela and the glorious Romanesque cathedral, which soars above the city, before enjoying time at leisure.

Day 6 O Grove Driver’s Day Off
Today is the driver’s day off so why not relax in the charming municipality of O Grove. Once an island, it now stands proudly on the mouth of the Arousa estuary. Brightly coloured boats bobon the Atlantic Ocean and the locals harvest mussels and scallops on the wooden platforms which balance on the water. The unspoiled beaches are wonderful for relaxing strolls.

Day 7 Pazo de Rubianes & Cambados
Today we take a guided tour of Pazo de Rubianes where history meets nature in a Galacian palace, flourishing with rose-pink camellias, glossy eucalyptus, japonica and cork oaks. It’s a treat for the eyes and a feast for the taste-buds. Here lies the most extensive vineyard in the region of Salnés and you will be able to taste the distinctly fruity Albariño white wine and learn about its cultivation. On the way back to the hotel we will stop at Cambados for leisure time. Here, you will be able to stroll beneath the stone arches that once guarded the town and discover the plaza which is a proud part of the Galician architectural tradition, as are the traditional granite houses.

Day 8 Gijón via A Coruña
Today we will make the interesting journey from O Grove to Gijón. We will follow the coast along the Bay of Biscay and see a wealth of archeologial sites from the 1st and 4th centuries including some impressive Roman Baths. We will also make a stop at A Coruña for a guided tour. Legends surround the soaring Greco-Roman Tower of Hercules which welcomes colourful boats into the bustling harbour. The site also features a sculpture park, the Monte dos Bicos rock carvings from the Iron Age and a Muslim cemetery.

Day 9-10 Spain to UK via Picos de Europa
From Gijón we will make our way to the Picos de Europa which are the highest peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains. We then continue on to Santander for our overnight sailing to Plymouth/ Portsmouth.
