Glorious Gardens of Cornwall

Spring is the perfect time to experience the awakening beauty of a glorious English garden and we have devised an itinerary to experience the beautiful blooms and scents of four flourishing Cornish gardens.  Based at the fantastic Lanhydrock Hotel, nestled amongst 180 acres of Cornish countryside, your groups will be surrounded by the joys of spring...

Mark says…“The unique climate of the south coast of Cornwall in spring ensures that some of the county’s best gardens open early in the year before the main holiday season really gets going.  Alongside some of Cornwall’s most famous gardens, we have included some hidden gems for this unique spring gardens tour.”
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our lovely hotel with time to settle in before dinner.

Day 2 Pencarrow House, Padstow and Bedruthan Steps
This morning, we visit Pencarrow House and its beautiful gardens. Lying at the foot of a sweeping valley, this largely Georgian mansion boasts a fine collection of paintings, china, porcelain and furniture whilst the impressive, extensive gardens are a joy to explore. The floral season starts in March with a dazzling display of camellias and rhododendrons (more than 600 varieties in total) which bloom through the spring, with other points of interest being the Iron Age hill fort, sunken Italian Garden with a quatrefoil fountain, ice house, palm house, ancient Cornish Cross and a grotto.

Following Pencarrow, we make our way to Padstow, where we enjoy a bit of free time and lunch in possibly the best place for fish and chips in Cornwall! After our afternoon in Padstow, we take the coast road out to the magnificent coastline at the Bedruthan Steps for a photo stop before returning to our hotel.

Please note: Pencarrow House Gardens open 01 March / House opens 25 March (access is via narrow lane)

Day 3 Lanhydrock House & Bodmin Railway
Today, we visit Lanhydrock House, an impressive late Victorian home and gardens. After a fire in 1881, the owner Thomas Charles, filled Lanhydrock with the latest technology, including state of the art ovens and warming cupboards in the kitchen and dining areas, central heating systems and fire hydrants.  We see the fascinating contrast between the upstairs and downstairs worlds by exploring the kitchens and servants’ quarters as well as the grand family spaces  After spending time here, we board our coach for the short drive to Bodmin & Wenford Railway at Bodmin General Station for a return journey to Boscarne Junction.

Day 4 Lost Gardens of Heligan and Caerhays Estate & Gardens
This morning, we experience one of the most unique and fascinating attractions in Cornwall, the Lost Gardens of Heligan. A genuine re-discovered secret garden, there are now an incredible 200 acres of gardens and estate to explore at leisure. With a unique national collection of 70 veteran camellias, 350 ancient rhododendrons (the earliest plantings date from around 1850) as well as productive gardens, woodland, a farm and even a jungle, we won’t fail to be impressed by these amazing gardens. We have the option of enjoying lunch in the kitchen and bakery before we depart for a visit to Caerhays Castle and Gardens.

Situated on a steep hillside, its 140 acre gardens have an international reputation for camellias and rhododendrons and is home to one of Britain’s four National Magnolia Collections. Despite its location, the gardens have been carefully devised with different routes to enable access for all.  We will enjoy a 2 hour excellent garden tour of this “world class” garden with the head gardener or his assistant, both of whom are a font of garden knowledge.

Caerhays Estate Gardens open 20 February / Castle opens 20 March
Please note: The narrow Cornish lanes around Caerhays mean that coach drivers need to plan their route carefully. The straightest and best route is from the main A390 - call our operations team for details)

Day 5 Departure
Today, we must leave beautiful Cornwall behind and make our way home.
