Historic Northumbria & County Durham

Our base for this tour is the beautiful Slaley Hall Hotel, which is ideally located for exploring historic Northumbria and the beautiful Durham Dales. Our Suggested Itinerary includes Roman archaeology, the Beamish Living History Museum and two fascinating National Trust properties.

Jodie says: “Every time I visit Beamish I always make sure I make time to order a dab & chips from Davy’s Fried Fish Shop in the Pit Village! The use of traditional cooking methods, with coal-fired ranges means there may be queues during busy periods - but they are ALWAYS well worth the wait!!”
Day 1 Arrival
On arrival at our hotel, we will enjoy a welcome tea or coffee whilst our bags are taken to our room.

Day 2 Hadrian’s Wall & Hexham 42 mile round trip
After breakfast we meet our step-on-guide for a full day guided tour of Hadrian’s Wall and Hexham. We travel through fabulous scenery of the beautiful Northumbria countryside along the Hadrian’s Wall route whilst our expert guide relays the history and heritage of this World Heritage Site. We visit the award winning Vindolanda, one of Europe’s most important Roman archaeological sites, where we will be guided through the excavations, with live excavations taking place during the summer months. Our visit also includes entrance to the Roman Army Museum where the past comes to life through the galleries. We can enjoy lunch here before visiting the charming market town of Hexham, characterised by its stone architecture, cobbled streets and historic buildings. We will continue our tour along Military Road where we will be able to see the magnificent wall at close quarters before returning to our hotel.

Day 3 Beamish Museum 38 mile round trip
Today, we will visit the Living Museum of the North, the Beamish Museum. This famous open air museum, set within 300 acres of beautiful County Durham countryside, tells the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. We will experience town life as it would have been in the 1940s during World War 2, visit a 1940s farm, take a trip on a steam train (some peak season weekends only) from Rowley Station, pop into the Colliery and the Pit Village in the early 1900s and take unlimited free rides on the Beamish tram.

Day 4 Wallington House (NT) & Cragside House (NT) 95 mile round trip
Today, we will visit Wallington House, an impressive Georgian house populated with a fascinating collection of treasures, set within a beautiful estate that includes a hidden walled garden. A guide will greet us on arrival and provide us with a 10 minute introductory talk on the history of the house in order to set the scene. In the afternoon we will make our way to Cragside House & Gardens, former home of the famous inventor, Lord Armstrong. In 1878, Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity and it is crammed full of ingenious gadgets – most of them still working – as well as an eclectic collection of British art, furniture, ceramics and natural history. Meanwhile, outside the house, one of the largest rock gardens in Europe leads down to the Iron Bridge, which in turn leads to the formal garden which we can enjoy or, alternatively, we can simply relax in the tearoom. Please note that the terrain at Cragside House is uneven with steep footpaths, many of which are unsuitable for wheelchair users.
