In Flanders Fields 2020

The First World War finally came to an end at eleven o’clock on the morning of November 11th 1918. Just over a hundred years after the end of the Great War, our commemorative tour explores the poignant battlefields, museums and memorials dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in Flanders Fields.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel.

Day 2 Tyne Cot, Passchendaele, Poperinge & Lijssenthoek
This morning we embark upon a tour of the wartime areas surrounding Ypres itself. Our first stop is the largest and most famous of the British and Commonwealth Cemeteries, Tyne Cot. A short distance away, we will then visit the Memorial Museum of Passchendaele and learn about the history of the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. After our visit, we enjoy free time for lunch in the town of Poperinge, originally a rest area for weary troops. We then travel to the Lijssenthoek Cemetery, originally a base hospital but now a visitor centre.

Day 3 Ypres Driver’s Day Off
Today we visit the excellent ‘In Flanders Fields’ Museum, located in the Cloth Hall. This moving museum now makes use of the latest technology in its portrayal of the history of the Great War. In 2018 the museum will feature a new exhibition on the Final Offensive. Our afternoon is then free for us to explore the town at leisure. This evening, we make our way to the Menin Gate, a memorial bearing the names of 54,389 soldiers who have no known grave. Here we join the enormously poignant ‘Last Post’ Ceremony which takes place at 8.00 pm every evening as a solemn act of remembrance.

Day 4 Departure
After breakfast we begin our journey home.
