Ireland's Hidden Heartlands

Based at our fantastic new hotel, the Sheraton Athlone, this new tour explores Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and the city of Galway. With easy motorway access, a central location and a bustling Irish town, Athlone is ideal for a driver’s day off!

GREAT NEWS: After Brexit (deal or no deal), Passports still won’t be needed for entry into Ireland. How’s that for a great deal!
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Athlone Driver’s Day Off
We spend today in Athlone, a pretty town perched on the banks of Ireland’s longest river, the Shannon. We take a guided tour of impressive Athlone Castle, taking in an immersive, multi-sensory experience. In the afternoon, we enjoy a cruise along the mighty river Shannon before spending the rest of our day at leisure exploring the town, which is home to Sean’s Bar - Ireland’s oldest pub!

Day 3 Galway
We travel west this morning, to the vibrant, colourful city of Galway – named 2020 European Capital of Culture! Galway is an exciting, lively town with something to interest everyone – from the beautiful colours of its portside houses, to the infectious rhythms of the traditional Irish music found in almost every pub and bar. Attractions include the Spanish Arch, built to protect the city’s quays, and Galway Cathedral.

Day 4 Carrick-on-Shannon & Strokestown Park
Today we travel north and visit the town of Carrick-on-Shannon, boarding the Moon River Pleasure Cruiser for a 1 hour boat trip on the River Shannon, with tea/coffee & biscuits included. After some free time in Carrick, we head to Strokestown Park and the Famine Museum. This grand Georgian Palladian mansion still features its original furnishings and fabrics, offering a glimpse into times past. Strokestown Park is also home to the National Famine Museum and acres of historic gardens & woodlands.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
