Italian Lakes & Tuscan Hills 2020

Our twin centre packaged tour offers the contrasting scenery of the picturesque Italian lakes and the rolling Tuscan hills. The tour features a selection of popular destinations and offers a few gourmet delights along the way including wine tasting and a traditional trattoria lunch.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel before dinner.

Day 2 Lake Garda - Salò & Wine Tasting
Today, we travel to Lake Garda to visit the town of Salò, the renowned port and entrance to the Riviera dei Limoni. Salò was the seat of the Fascist government during the Second World War and consequently home to the infamous dictator, Mussolini, during this time. Traces of its prestigious past can be seen along the main street in the elegant historic centre lined with beautiful buildings, pretty boutiques and restaurants. In the afternoon we enjoy wine tasting at Cantine Redaelli de Zinis, a stunning winery to the south west of the Lake. This region is known as the Tuscany of Lake Garda and will provide us with an excellent, authentic Italian experience.

Day 3 Iseo Driver’s Day Off
We spend today at leisure and can either enjoy the facilities of our superb hotel or spend some time in the authentic historic centre of Iseo with its attractive cafés and wine bars. We also recommend taking the boat trip from Iseo to Monte Isola, the largest inhabited lake island in southern Europe.

Day 4 Chianciano Terme via Bologna
This morning we leave behind beautiful Lake Iseo and head south to the Tuscan Hills. Our journey is via Bologna, known as the gastronomic capital of northern Italy and home of the popular dish spaghetti bolognese. Here we have free time to explore this stunning city and enjoy lunch in one of the many cafés on the main square, Piazza Maggiore, before continuing on our journey to Chianciano Terme, our base for the next four nights.

Day 5 Orvieto
This morning we visit the medieval grand hill town of Orvieto in Umbria, home of one of Italy’s best loved white wines. This lovely town has an impressive gothic cathedral and a labyrinth of once secret caves and tunnels. Be sure to have a hearty stroll around Orvieto to build up an appetite as our next visit will be to the Trattoria da Bruno, where we have a fabulously authentic Italian lunch with wine before returning to our hotel later this afternoon.

Day 6 Siena & Pienza
This morning we travel to Siena, possibly Italy’s loveliest medieval city. Here we explore the central piazza, Il Campo with its fountain, the Fonte Gaia, Palazzo Comunale (the city’s Town Hall) and the Torre del Mangia. Of the many attractions Siena offers, a visit to the impressive Gothic cathedral is a must! The Duomo lies in a piazza above the Piazza del Campo and is filled with treasures by Pisano, Donatello and Michelangelo as well as frescoes by Pinturicchio and pillars and walls of striking, striped marble. In the afternoon we visit nearby Pienza surrounded by the wonderful hills of the Val d’Orcia. The town, constructed in the 1450s has remained practically unchanged over the centuries and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We can sample wine and cheese as Pienza is considered to be the “capital” of Pecorino cheese and even holds a festival each September to celebrate its famous product.

Day 7 Chianciano Terme Driver’s Day Off
Today is a day at leisure. Enjoy the facilities and surroundings of our hotel, perhaps visiting the thermal baths or one of the museums, or simply enjoy exploring the town.
