Locks, Stock & the BBC

Diverse, energetic and bursting with character, Manchester is one of the most exciting places to visit in the UK. We enjoy a fantastic cruise along the Manchester Ship Canal, a nostalgic steam train journey, a visit to Bury Transport Museum and an entertaining tour of the BBC studios at Salford Quays.
PACKAGED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Manchester Ship Canal Cruise
Today we embark on a cruise along the fascinating 35 miles of the Manchester Ship Canal. We enjoy lively commentary on our six hour cruise which tells the story of how this magnificent waterway shaped the city of Manchester and the North West. Travelling through locks and bridges that have remained largely unchanged since their construction over 100 years ago, we gain a revealing insight into the facts, history and dramas of one of Britain’s major waterways.

Day 3 East Lancashire Railway
This morning we travel to Rawtenstall, where we enjoy a nostalgic trip on the East Lancashire Railway to the famous market town of Bury. When we arrive in style at our destination, we visit the Bury Transport Museum which has recently undergone a £3 million refurbishment. The museum is located across the road from the station and displays a wide selection of restored vehicles including vintage buses, a tram, tractors, transport vehicles and a historic steam locomotive. From Bury we travel to Wilmslow to enjoy lunch, after which we can explore the town at leisure.

Day 4 BBC Media City Tour
We join a tour of the BBC at Media City UK in Salford and walk in the footsteps of some of our favourite celebrities. The studios are home to a whole host of BBC channels and programmes including favourites such as Match of the Day, Blue Peter, A Question of Sport, Mastermind, BBC Breakfast, Radio 5 live, CBBC, BBC Sport and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, to name just a few. Well-informed and friendly tour guides will entertain and surprise us, giving us a fascinating insight into how TV and radio work. We can also have a go at making our own news and weather bulletins in an interactive studio!

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
