Magical Harz Mountains & The Fairytale Road

The picturesque, timber-framed town of Wernigerode on the north slopes of the Harz Mountains is the beautiful location of our hotel, which provides the perfect base for a magical fairytale tour.

Driver Comment...
“Fantastic service, really well organised hotel and very popular with our customers, plus the best buffet I have ever seen, with a huge amount of choice!” Aug 2016
Day 1 Arrival
This afternoon, we arrive at our hotel and have time to settle in prior to dinner this evening.

Day 2 Wernigerode Castle & The Brocken Driver’s Day Off
After breakfast this morning we may choose to travel on the Harz narrow gauge railway (must be pre-booked, payment by cash only on the day) for a 1.5 hour return journey to the summit of the highest of the Harz Mountains, the Brocken, for that ‘top of the world’ experience! In the afternoon we are free to explore the Old Town of Wernigerode at our leisure. We can wander down Breite Strasse and admire the stunning wood carvings on the traditional houses, enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafés before perhaps catching the Schloss bus or the ‘little train’ up the steep incline to Wernigerode Castle (closed Mondays). The views from the Castle walls across the Harz Mountains are simply breathtaking and the castle itself is fairly small but extremely beautiful.

Day 3 The Fairytale Road 282km/175 mile round trip
Today we will follow Germany’s Fairytale Road and explore Goslar’s timber house-lined medieval streets. We can visit the town hall with its ornate ceiling decorations and watch the animated figures of the town Glockenspiel. We then continue north along scenic roads to Hamelin, home of the famous Pied Piper. Here we may enjoy a guided walking tour with the Pied Piper himself!

Day 4 Quedlinburg 60km/37 mile round trip
Today, we will travel to the birthplace of Germany, where the great Saxon Emperor, Henry the Fowler, was buried in 936 and where his widow founded a religious community for women on a sandstone cliff overlooking the town below. The 16th century Quedlinburg Castle and the old 12th century Romanesque church of St Servatius dominate the area, and the graves of Henry and his wife still exist beneath the choir stalls! Meanwhile, Quedlinburg’s Old Town is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site courtesy of its exceptionally preserved Romanesque architecture.

Day 5 Blankenburg & Sangerhausen 193km/120 mile round trip
This morning, we will travel to Blankenburg, with its restored half-timber houses, city walls and spacious gardens before travelling onwards to Sangerhausen, Europe’s rose garden, with an unparalleled collection of over 75,000 roses.

Day 6 Departure
We say goodbye to this bewitching part of the world and return to our local area.
