SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Het Loo Palace & Gardens & Netherlands Open Air Museum
We start our day at the magnificent, 17th century Het Loo Palace, the former royal
residence of the Dutch royal family. The Dutch Baroque Palace closed in January 2018
to undergo a major renovation project and to improve and expand visitor facilities.
Reopening in 2022, we’re treated to a look at the Palace’s grand interior and lavish
rooms with original furniture, objects and paintings of the House of Orange-Nassau.
(Please note, the Palace is due to reopen in the summer of 2022, but the exact date
is to be confirmed.) We also explore the stunning gardens, which feature symmetrical
parterres, impressive freshwater fountains and garden sculptures from Greek mythology. This afternoon we visit the fascinating Netherlands Open Air Museum for a guided tour. Displaying a slice of Dutch life and history, this open air park is the setting for over 80 original historic buildings including houses, farmhouses and mills where we can meet friendly farmers, the blacksmith, fisherman and miller who provide us with an interactive history of the country and its heritage.

Day 3 Floriade
This morning we make our way to Almere to spend the day at the stunning Floriade
Expo. This beautiful event only happens once every 10 years, so we’re treated to a
truly spectacular day out. We enjoy the scents, tastes and colours of fabulous flowers,
plants, vegetables and fruit as we discover 40 inspiring country presentations, as well
as conferences, tasting sessions and a vibrant arts and culture programme. Other
highlights include the magnificent Arboretum, containing an alphabetically organised
tree and plant encyclopaedia that we can wander through, and the fantastic 850m
cable car journey, which transports us between the south and north of the Floriade
park with fabulous views below!

Day 4 Arnhem, ‘A Bridge Too Far’ & Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’
This morning we head to Arnhem for a step-on guided tour. We discover events that
took place here during WWII, focusing on Operation Market Garden in 1944, when
British and Polish troops were parachuted behind enemy lines in an attempt to bring
the war to an early end. We have the opportunity to view the John Frost Bridge,
named after the British commanding officer, also known as ‘A Bridge Too Far’. We
have free time for lunch in Arnhem before visiting the Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’
for a guided tour. This superb and moving museum, dedicated to the 1944 Battle of
Arnhem, is housed within the impressive 19th century Villa Hartenstein, the former
headquarters of the British command during the Battle. Time permitting, we also visit
the Oosterbeek War Cemetery, where nearly 2,000 Allied servicemen are buried.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
