Poles Apart - Krakow & Zakopane

Our twin centre packaged tour is based in two of Poland’s most popular cities, hugely popular medieval Krakow and the folklore town of Zakopane, boasting unique architecture and a dramatic mountainous backdrop.

Jodie says...
“Auschwitz-Birkenau is one of the most moving and emotional places I have ever been to. It should be a visit everyone makes.”

Mark says...
“The Grand Nosalowy Dwor is a great hotel for a combination tour with Krakow with lovely modern facilities including an excellent swimming pool and plenty of space for a group.”
Day 1 Arrival
After our overnight stops, we make our way through the Czech Republic and into Southern Poland. We will receive a warm welcome from the staff at our hotel in Krakow and will have time to settle in prior to dinner.

Day 2 Memorial Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau 140km/87 mile round trip
Today, we pay a visit to one of the most moving and poignant sites in the whole of Europe. The concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau is listed by UNESCO World Heritage as a site of great historical importance given that it was here that 1.5 million people were killed by the Nazis between 1942 and 1945. We will be provided with a guided tour through the museums and the original camp barracks.

Day 3 Krakow Driver’s Day Off
After breakfast we will meet our guide for a 2 hour walking tour of Poland’s former capital, considered by many to be the most beautiful city in the country. Our centrally located hotel is ideally positioned only a five minute walk from the main market square with the historic Cloth Hall in its centre. For 700 years, Cloth Hall has been a market-place and is where textiles have been traded since medieval times. Upstairs, the Krakow National Museum (closed on Mondays) exhibits a wonderful collection of 19th century Polish art. Every hour, we will hear the golden trumpet from the tower of the Basilica of the Virgin Mary playing a trumpet melody which comes to a very abrupt end on each occasion. Why? Because the trumpet melody commemorates a trumpeter from Krakow who was shot mid-tune by a Tatar archer in 1241 when he was warning the city of the approach of the Mongols who subsequently besieged the city! Other attractions include Wawel Royal Castle, built on Wawel Hill, where people have been living for 50,000 years and where, over the past 1,000 years, Polish Kings decided to take up residence.

Day 4 Wieliczka Salt Mine & Zakopane 109km/68 miles
This morning, we will leave Krakow behind and travel to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a stunning “underground town” located on nine levels with chambers connected by corridors. We have the chance to visit twenty of the historic chambers with its saline lakes, remarkable salt sculptures and the marvellous St Kinga Chapel. There is a shortened tour available by lift for groups who are not able to manage the stairs (there are 800 of them!) which must be booked in advance. After perhaps enjoying lunch in the underground ‘Miner’s Tavern’, we will re-board our coach and make our way southwards to the Polish resort of Zakopane and our second hotel, located at the foot of the Tatra Mountains.

Day 5 Zakopane
This morning, we will explore the lovely ‘folklore’ town of Zakopane, a popular winter skiing resort but equally pretty in the summer months too. We can take a stroll down Krupowki Street, the main pedestrian area with numerous restaurants and an array of boutiques. If we choose we can take the funicular railway to Guba?owka Hill - the ride covers the 1298m-long route in 3½ minutes and climbs around 300m - from where we can enjoy fabulous views of the town and the surrounding Tatra Mountains. On returning to the centre of town, we will come across the local market, famous for its leather goods, nestled between the very foot of the hill and Krupowki Street … and a whole alley of local sheep cheese sellers! We can return to our hotel by foot or alternatively by local taxi (not included).

Day 6 Dunajec Valley & River Raft 120km/75 mile round trip
Today, we will make a full day trip to the Pieniny Mountains and the beautiful Dunajec Valley. The highlight of our day will be a relaxing 2.5 hour river rafting trip (May-Sept) from Katy harbour. Rafting has been practised here for centuries and our journey, on traditional, wooden rafts will take us about 18km down the Dunajec River through one of the most beautiful gorges in Europe, ending at the Szczawnica harbour.

Day 7 Departure
Today, we will leave our hotel behind and begin our journey home.

Operator Note: We have not included overnight hotels for the journey to and from Poland since these will depend on the location from which you are travelling. Please contact the Sales Team for a quotation for overnight locations based on your specific needs.
