Pretty Towns, Ancient Cities and a Couple of Tipples

Picturesque Vianden, with its riverside setting and beautiful hilltop castle, is the base for our fantastic new tour. As well as visits to Luxembourg’s scenic Mullerthal region, nicknamed ‘Little Switzerland’, and the capital, Luxembourg City, we make the most of our proximity to the German border and spend some time marvelling at the Roman monuments in ancient Trier. We’ve also packaged in tastings at a brewery and a winery to wet our whistles as we explore.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Echternach & Bitburger Brewery
This morning we embark on a 45 minute scenic drive through the magical Mullerthal region, affectionately known as ‘Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland’ due to its hilly landscape reminiscent of Switzerland. Upon arrival in Luxembourg’s oldest town, Echternach, we have some time at leisure to explore this lovely abbey town. Retaining much of its medieval ambience, we can wander through the winding streets and admire the remains of its ancient city wall. After free time for lunch here, we cross the border into Germany for a visit to the Bitburger Brewery, which produces around four million hectolitres of the good stuff annually. On our 1 hour guided tour, we find out more about the family brewery, the production process and what makes Bitburger Premium Pils so special, before tasting two beers.

Day 3 Trier & Bernard-Massard Winery
Today we head back to Germany, to the city of Trier. We spend the morning exploring this fascinating place and its treasure trove of well-preserved Roman structures, including the spectacular Roman city gate – Porta Nigra, the grand Saint Peter’s Cathedral, and Aula Palatina, a Roman palace basilica. We might like to visit the Archaeological Museum to discover life in Roman Trier, or take to the water for a relaxing boat cruise on the Moselle River. In the afternoon we visit the Bernard-Massard winery, the leading family producer of still and sparkling wines in Luxembourg, with a whopping 3.5 million bottles leaving its cellars every year. During our visit we enjoy a tasting of two of the fantastic wines.

Day 4 Luxembourg City
We stay put in Luxembourg today, visiting the vibrant capital, Luxembourg City. We start our day with a 2 hour, step-on guided tour of the city to get our bearings, before enjoying the afternoon at leisure. We can revisit some of our favourite sights from this morning’s tour or uncover more of the city’s gems. Attractions include the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg – the Grand Ducal Palace, the 17th century Cathédrale Notre-Dame, the fascinating National Museum of History and Art, and the 18th century tunnels and WWII shelter at Casemates du Bock.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
