Rome & Sorrento
A real Italian classic tour featuring a few days in the eternal city of Rome where we will visit both the city centre’s top sights and the beautiful Villa of the Emperor Hadrian, just outside Rome. Then down to the gorgeous Sorrento peninsula, one of the most scenic areas in the whole of Italy and immortalized by the likes of Sofia Loren and Gracie Fields. Here we marvel in the delights of the unique Amalfi Coast and also visit the intriguing and ancient Roman city of Pompeii, buried by volcanic ash in AD79.
PACKAGED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 Hadrian’s Villa & Villa d’Este Gardens
This morning, we visit Hadrian’s Villa, the remains of an opulent 2nd century estate built and enjoyed by the emperor Hadrian. We explore its crumbled villa, luscious gardens and fountain square as we hear of his pampered life here. We also visit the Villa d’Este Gardens, a 16th century Renaissance masterpiece made up of stunning terraces, fountains, grottoes and ornate pools.
Day 3 Rome
Today brings another excursion into central Rome, this time for a guided tour of St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums. We take in beautiful St Peter’s Basilica and St Peter’s Square and visit the Vatican Museums to see their priceless treasures, including Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel – learning their history from our guide along the way. Afterwards, there is free time to relax and stroll as we wish before returning to our hotel.
Day 4 Sorrento Coast
Today we drive south to the beautiful Sorrento peninsula and check in to our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 5 Amalfi Coast
A full day’s drive along the famous Amalfi Coast (local coach hire included) boasting some of the most spectacular scenery in the Mediterranean. Departing from Sorrento, we travel along the winding coastal road affording lovely views over Positano. Further on we reach the capital of Amalfi itself, where you will enjoy free time for a stroll and lunch along its mosaic-lined alleyways. A short boat ride takes us from Amalfi to Minori (section forbidden for coaches) where we re-board our coach for the rest of this fabulous day out.
Day 6 Pompeii
Visit the unique and incredible Roman city of Pompeii. Completely destroyed during a huge eruption from Vesuvius in AD79 and covered in volcanic ash, much of Pompeii remained intact and your local guide can really bring back to life how things were in this important and illustrious Roman city during its heyday.
Day 7 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
