Something Fishy on the North Yorks Railway

Renowned for its exquisite architecture, Gothic cathedral and quaint medieval streets, York is a city to fall in love with. On our superb new packaged tour we spend a day exploring this beautiful city including a cruise on the River Ouse. We travel to the region’s stunning Heritage Coast to visit the seaside town of Whitby and on our return, we experience the striking landscapes of the North York Moors on a steam train inland to Pickering.

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 York City Cruise & York
This morning we enjoy a sightseeing tour of York from a different perspective as we discover the history and beauty of York city on a 45 minute cruise on the River Ouse. In the afternoon we have free time to explore this compact ancient walled city by foot. Stroll around ‘The Shambles’, one of the most picturesque and best preserved medieval streets in the world. Visit the magnificent York Minster and the state-of -the-art Undercroft Museum, housed in chambers beneath the cathedral, which tells the story of York’s history through interactive displays and artefacts. Experience over 300 years of railway history at the National Railway Museum where you can climb on board historic carriages and view icons of the rails including the famous Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive.

Day 3 Whitby & North Yorkshire Moors Railway
This morning we make our way to the charming seaside town of Whitby where we spend free time exploring its winding cobbled lanes and bustling harbour; all overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum to see the attic where Cook lodged as an apprentice seaman plus his maps, letters and etchings from the South Seas. In the afternoon we take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, famous for being featured in its own TV series on Channel 5, ‘The Yorkshire Team Railway: All Aboard’. Departing from Whitby, we are transported back in time as we steam through 24 miles of beautiful countryside. En route, look out for the celebrity Goathland Station which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film. Our scenic journey ends at the attractive 1930’s themed station at Pickering.

Day 4 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
