Steam & Sail in Fort William

Our fabulous five day holiday discovering the beauty of the Scottish west coast includes visits to Oban, a stunning canal cruise and a ride on Britain’s only mountain gondola. However, the highlight of this tour is a return journey on the magnificent Jacobite Steam Train as it puffs away through magnificent scenery. Our hotel is the Alexandra Hotel which is perfectly located in the centre of Fort William.
Day 1 Arrival in Fort William
We arrive in Fort William on the spectacular west coast of Scotland, our base for the next four nights.

Day 2 Oban 90 mile round trip
This morning we take a scenic drive along Loch Linnhe to Oban, the unofficial capital of the West Highlands, acclaimed as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’. The mountains, lochs and islands have captivated artists, authors, composers and poets for centuries and are as striking now as they were hundreds of years ago. McCaig’s Tower, the distillery and the Caithness Glass Visitor Centre all add to Oban’s attractions where we will have the day at leisure to explore.
(Please contact the sales team if you prefer to explore the Isle of Mull on this day)

Day 3 Canal Cruise, Nevis Range & Fort William 15 mile round trip
This morning, we embark on a 1 hour canal cruise departing from Banavie to Gairlochy when we will soak up the unique atmosphere and keep our eyes peeled for deer, otters and eagles as we navigate through working locks and bridges whilst marvelling at historical landmarks and spectacular mountains. After our cruise, we will take a ride on a gondola at Nevis Range. Britain’s only mountain gondola will transport us from 300ft up to 2150ft on the north face of Aonach Mor, the eighth highest mountain in Britain. The journey takes approximately 12 - 15 minutes each way. We enjoy the scenic ride, whilst absorbing the stunning views of the Scottish Highlands, including the Great Glen, Ben Nevis and surrounding areas. On a clear day this spectacular view can extend as far as the Inner Hebrides. We can then enjoy free time for a drink in the restaurant, take in the panoramic views and wander around the Mountain Discovery Centre. We will return to ground level feeling fully refreshed from the clear mountain air and return to our hotel where we will have the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 4 Jacobite Steam Train Fort William - Mallaig Drivers Day Off
Today, we embark on a journey described as the greatest railway journey in the world on the famous Jacobite Steam Train, which will take us on an 84 mile return journey from Fort William to Mallaig. We will encounter spectacular and stunning scenery on the west coast of Scotland as we travel along the bank of Loch Eil before experiencing the iconic curve of the Glenfinnan Viaduct’s magnificent 21 arches, featured in the Harry Potter movies. After enjoying the stark beauty of Lochs Eilt, Ailort and Nan Uamh, we will have spectacular views of the Isle of Skye. Arriving in the fishing village of Mallaig, we will have over an hour and a half to enjoy a walk around the village to take in the atmosphere and explore the shops, bars and restaurants for this lunchtime stopover. We will then board our train again for our return journey back to the hotel.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast we depart our hotel and begin our journey home.
