Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 South Devon Railway & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and Buckfast Butterfly Farm
This morning, we enjoy a picturesque train ride with stunning views of Dartmoor and the beautiful Devon hills on the South Devon Railway. Leaving Buckfastleigh with its model shop, museum and award-winning gardens, we discover heritage stations and attractions at each stop. With something for everyone, it’s a perfect day filled with tradition and nostalgia. Next, we will visit the Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary and the Buckfast Butterfly Farm, which are conveniently located adjacent to the car park. At these attractions, you can learn about tropical butterflies and three species of otters.
Day 3 Buckfast Abbey & My Time
This morning, we will be visiting Buckfast Abbey, an 11th-century abbey that was revitalised in the early 20th century and is home to a community of Benedictine monks. We can explore the grand Abbey Church, take a stroll through the beautiful Sensory and Lavender Gardens, and learn about the daily lives of the monks at the Exhibition Centre. Afterwards, we’ll have some free time to enjoy lunch at the Abbey restaurants before returning to our hotel. Located near Dartmoor National Park, we can take a lovely scenic walk from our hotel.
Day 4 Full-Day Tour of Dartmoor National Park with Guide Emma Cunis
Today’s adventure takes us to Dartmoor for a full-day scenic drive, complete with commentary from knowledgeable Dartmoor guide Emma Cunis. With photo stops and short, easy walks throughout the day, the National Park is the largest and highest upland area in southern Britain. We will enjoy the stunning mosaic landscape with breathtaking views of majestic rocky crags, rolling hills, lush ancient woodlands, and shimmering rivers, with ever-changing beautiful flora and fauna. Highlights include Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Haytor, Chagford, Shapley, Postbridge, Princetown, Porkhill, and Sharpitor. Throughout this guided tour, we’ll learn about geology, archaeology, flora and fauna, folklore, farming, and the National Park’s Right to Roam. Emma will also share personal stories from her childhood growing up in this remarkable area.
Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
