PACKAGED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 Salzburg
Today we head to the regional capital of Salzburgerland and the home of ‘The Sound of Music’, historic Salzburg. The old town is a maze of charming pedestrian alleyways with many famous and historic landmarks. We can explore Mozart’s Birthplace at No 9 Getreidegasse, where the composer was born in 1756 and which now serves as a museum depicting his early life and view the memorial statue of Mozart in the Plaza de Mozart public square. We may also wish to visit the impressive 17th century Salzburg Cathedral with its mighty dome and two towers, which still contains the baptismal font in which Mozart was baptised the day after his birth. Other attractions to discover include the 11th century Fortress Hohensalzburg perched on a hilltop overlooking the city and the beautiful 17th century Mirabell Palace and Gardens – where the song ‘Do-Re-Mi’ was filmed for ‘The Sound of Music’.
Day 3 Unken
We have the whole day at leisure in our resort, the pretty town of Unken surrounded by the spectacular Reiter Steinberge mountain range. Taking in the fresh mountain air, we can choose what to do. Perhaps take a local minibus to the natural alpine beauty of the Heutal Valley for a scenic walk or catch the local bus to the nearby pretty market town of Lofer. From here, we can take the Loferalm cable car up the mountain for stunning mountain views before returning to our hotel for a well-earned drink in the bar.
Day 4 Bavarian Lakes
This morning, we travel through the spectacular mountain scenery of the Bavarian Alps to Lake Chiemsee. We board the ferry from Prien to visit the Herrenchiemsee Palace, located in a magnificent garden setting on its own island. The land was originally acquired in 1873 by King Ludvig II of Bavaria to build a palace in honour of King Louis XIV of France. Built to replicate Versailles Palace, we can explore the stunning and ornate neo-baroque styled state rooms. Afterwards, we will board the return ferry to Prien and return to our hotel.
Day 5 Zell am See
Today we have a full day excursion to the pretty town of Zell am See, which is nestled on the shores of lovely Lake Zell and is one of Austria’s most popular resorts in both summer and winter. We enjoy a 45-minute cruise on Lake Zell, admiring the beautiful scenery from the water. Afterwards there is free time to perhaps stroll through the medieval centre or along the lake shores and you may also wish to take a cable car ride up the Schmittenhöhe mountain that overlooks the town, for some simply stunning views back down and beyond.
Day 6 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
