The Gateway to Wales

This Suggested Itinerary is all about stunning scenery and charming villages. Based in the Forest of Dean, we will enjoy a train journey and take in the Wye Valley and the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Day 1 Arrival
Departing our local area this morning, we arrive at our hotel in the Forest of Dean in time for dinner.

Day 2 Wye Valley & Tintern 42 mile round trip
This morning we enjoy a scenic drive along the Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and one of the most ramatic and scenic areas in southern Britain. We make our way to the historic market town of Ross-on-Wye, built on a cliff overlooking the River Wye. From here we head south towards Monmouth with its unique medieval gatehouse on
the 13th century Monnow Bridge before we arrive in the village of Tintern, which is dominated by the spectacular remains of Tintern Abbey. We can spend time at leisure visiting the craft and antique shops.

Day 3 Chepstow & Dean Forest Railway 29 mile round trip
This morning we make our way to Chepstow, a bustling border market town. We begin with a visit to Chepstow Castle which dominates the town, perched high on a crag guarding the river crossing between England and Wales. It is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain and the views across the Wye Valley are simply breathtaking. We will then pay a visit to the award winning Chepstow Museum, housed within an elegant 18th century townhouse. The museum’s exhibits reflect the development of Chepstow, once an important port and bustling market town. We can also spend some time exploring the winding back streets with a variety of shops or take in the old town walls and the 15th century gatehouse. We can enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants or cafés before we board our coach and travel to Norchard, the main station of the Dean Forest Railway. We have time to visit the museum and be shown around the locomotive restoration shed before we take a return journey through 8.5 miles of the magical medieval Forest of Dean (on a steam or heritage diesel train).

Day 4 Brecon Beacons, Hay-on-Wye & Ledbury 132 mile round trip
Today, we discover the magnificent Brecon Beacons which offer some of the most spectacular and diverse landscapes in Europe. We see Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales and the traditional Mid-Wales town of Brecon with its narrow streets and passageways lined with Georgian and Jacobean shop fronts. We will stop for lunch in the pretty little town of Hay-on-Wye, famous as the town of books. Every Thursday Hay Market is a bustling place with shoppers working their way around stalls piled high with local produce, whilst other stalls sell vintage wares, clothes and gifts. We will make our way back to the hotel via Ledbury with its prime examples of timber-framed buildings - don’t miss Church Lane, a cobbled street within the Heritage centre, Butchers Row Folk museum and the Painted Room leading to a fine Parish Church. Alternatively, we could pay a visit to Hillside Brewery, a microbrewery in the Forest of Dean where we can see, touch, smell and experience the brewing process up close before sitting back to taste a well-earned ale overlooking some of Gloucestershire’s most stunning landscapes!

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast this morning we make our way back to our local area.
