The Glorious Gotthard Panorama Express

The highlight of our twin centre Switzerland and Italy tour is a scenic trip on the Gotthard Panorama Express (formerly known as the Wilhelm Tell Express) incorporating a lake steamer and train journey. The tour includes Switzerland with its dramatic mountains and Lake Maggiore with its Italian Mediterranean feel.

Day 1 Arrival
We will arrive at our hotel in Seelisberg and settle in prior to dinner this evening.

Day 2 Mount Pilatus Railway & Lucerne 79km/49 mile round trip
After breakfast we take a journey to Alpnachstad where we join the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. Mount Pilatus is the emblem of central Switzerland and it is to Pilatus Kulm, that our little train is heading for as it winds its way up a 48 degree climb, through lush meadows carpeted with alpine flowers, past sparkling mountain streams and fascinating rock faces. When we reach the awe- inspiring summit we see the spectacular views over Lake Lucerne and its town, as well as the Central and Bernese Alps. Our wondrous journey does not finish here as we continue by cable car down to Kriens, where we re-join our coach to Lucerne. Lucerne is one of the world’s prettiest cities and here we enjoy time at leisure to discover attractions such as the world famous Chapel Bridge and Water Tower, the Lion Monument and many other sites of interest.

Day 3 Gotthard Panorama Express & Stresa 252km/157 miles
Leaving our hotel this morning, we make our way to Lucerne from where we join the Gotthard Panorama Express historic steamer*. Our 2.5 hour cruise takes us past picturesque villages and sleepy bays, as we make our way to Fluelen. It is here we disembark and board our train. Travelling through the Reuss Valley on the world famous Gotthard Line, we swiftly climb from 470m to 1100m towards Goschenen, taking us through the 15km tunnel where we emerge to the wonderful scenery of southern Switzerland. We continue our journey crossing breathtaking bridges and passing charming villages until we reach Locarno. Here we disembark and re-join our coach as we make our way into Italy and along the shores of Lake Maggiore where we arrive at our second hotel.

*Steamer may sometimes be replaced by a modern style boat.

Day 4 Stresa Driver’s Day Off
We have a full day at leisure today to enjoy the beautiful resort of Stresa. With panoramic views across the lake, botanical gardens, churches and shops there is much to do. A short boat trip to the Borromean Islands is well recommended but the choice is yours.

Day 5 Orta San Giulio 49km/30 mile round trip
This morning we make our way to enchanting Lake Orta and its principal town of Orta San Giulio. Built on the slopes of a steep hill (the Sacro Monte) the town juts out into the lake. The narrow streets are full of Italian charm and elegance and we can enjoy a relaxing morning discovering Lake Orta. This afternoon we return to Stresa where the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 6 Lake Como 242km/150 mile round trip
After breakfast, we travel east to Lake Como, where we will spend the day exploring the prettiest lake in northern Italy. Its breathtaking mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the magnificent gardens with their vast array of colour. We can stroll around at leisure and maybe take a ferry over to stunning Bellagio, the “jewel” of Lake Como. This lovely, historic village is teeming with character and boasts a fine selection of lakeside cafés, offering superb views.
