The Heart of Provence

Provence is famous for its iconic landscapes of rolling fields of aromatic lavender surrounded by medieval villages, ancient Roman remains, the majestic city of Avignon, wonderful local markets and fantastic food and drink - a true feast for all the senses.
Day 1 Arrival
We make our way southwards today to the beautiful medieval market town of Uzès.

Day 2 Avignon
This morning we head to the beautiful city of Avignon, set on the banks of the Rhône with dramatic views of its 800 year old medieval ramparts surrounding the magnificent Palais des Papes. The famous Pont d’Avignon of nursery rhyme fame sits majestically half way across the Rhône and the city teems with cobbled streets, quaint boutiques and leafy squares. We recommend a guided tour of the Palais des Papes or, for those who like to take things at a slower pace, why not enjoy an afternoon cruise on the Rhône to see the majestic city from the river?

Day 3 Uzès Driver’s Day Off
Today you can relax by the hotel swimming pool or take a stroll into the medieval town of Uzès where the market traditionally takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the morning, on the picturesque Place aux Herbes.

Day 4 Pont du Gard & Nîmes
Today, we visit the ancient Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, an amazing feat of engineering built over 2,000 years ago to take water to the city of Nîmes. We recommend a visit to the museum and visitor centre, which provides an interactive insight into how the aqueduct was made. We will continue to the city of Nîmes, which was founded around a spring fed by the Pont du Gard. Visit the beautiful Jardins de la Fontaine, the Roman amphitheatre (the best preserved arena in France), the Maison Carrée - a Roman temple built around 19BC and still standing today, where you can enjoy a film on the history of the city - or the many shops, cafés and boutiques that line the ancient streets.

Day 5 The Heart of Provence
We begin this morning with a journey to the medieval village of Les Baux de Provence. Perched on top of a fortified rocky site, we visit the unique Carrières de Lumières - an amazing multimedia show inside a huge man-made rock cavern which immerses you in a sound and light show from floor to ceiling. We then continue to the romantic town of Saint Rèmy de Provence, with its attractive centre with plenty of shops, cafés and squares to wander through. The town is famous for its local lavender and as the place where Van Gogh painted The Starry Night when staying here. After time for lunch we continue our Provençal adventure to the charming L’Isle sur la Sorgue - this ‘island town’ is set amongst quaint canals.

Day 6 Departure
We make our way home today.
