Traditional Lancashire & The Ribble Valley

This is one of our most popular Packaged Itineraries. We have included a trip on a heritage railway, entrance to three other well-known Lancashire landmarks, and now we have the fantastic addition of a canal cruise!

Driver Comment: “10 out of 10 for this hotel and staff excellent.”
Day 1 Arrival
On arrival at our hotel, we will enjoy a welcome tea or coffee whilst our bags are taken to our room.

Day 2 Samlesbury Hall & Canal Cruise 20 mile round trip
We will begin our day with a visit to historic Samlesbury Hall, a fabulous half-timbered black and white medieval house built in 1325 as a family home. We will enjoy a guided tour which brings the history of the house to life and hear tales of intrigue and witchcraft through the centuries. After being bewitched by Samlesbury, we will make our way to Riley Green Marina to embark upon a wonderful narrow boat cruise along the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Our 3 hour round trip passes through delightful countryside including Withnell Fold Nature Reserve, past the old Paper Mill and on to the lovely hamlet of Wheelton and Johnsons Hillock Locks before descending and ascending two locks and returning to Riley Green. During our cruise aboard “Romance”, we can relax, unwind and enjoy a two course lunch. Our narrow boat is light, airy and spacious with disabled access, and each table has a panoramic view of the canal.

Day 3 East Lancs Railway, Bury Market & Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre 55 mile round trip
Today, we travel to Rawtenstall where we step back in time for a nostalgic trip on a steam train along the East Lancashire Railway. Our journey takes us through the beautiful Lancashire countryside to the market town of Bury. We make our way to the world famous Bury Market, which is perhaps best known for the traditional Lancashire black pudding. There is free time to explore and have lunch before we continue to the Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre. The museum tells the story of this well-known engineer, steeplejack and English eccentric.

Day 4 Oswaldtwistle Mills & Gawthorpe Hall 77 mile round trip
This morning, we will enjoy a scenic drive through the picturesque Ribble Valley stopping en route at the Oswaldtwistle Mills shopping village and garden centre. This award winning former weaving mill has over 100 retailers under one roof, 5 restaurants, an ice cream parlour, garden centre, mill grounds, craft and sewing centre, Textile and Heritage Museum and even its own wildfowl reserve. We can enjoy a spot of browsing and lunch before continuing on our way to Gawthorpe Hall. Affectionately known as the “Downton of the North”, having been redesigned by Sir Charles Barry (who also redesigned Highclere Castle) this Elizabethan gem is a stunning structure with a rich history. The Long Gallery is home to portraits of society figures from the 17th century, some of which are on loan from the National Portrait Gallery in London, and there is also a Bronte exhibition.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we leave our hotel and begin our journey home.
