Travelling the Coasts of the Adriatic

The stunning Adriatic Sea separates the Balkan and Italian Peninsulas. We explore both sides of the sapphire sea with wonderful, medieval cities and beautiful, contrasting coastlines.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel before dinner.

Day 2 Opatija Driver’s Day Off
Today we can enjoy our elegant coastal resort of Opatija. We can stroll along its 12km promenade lined with impressive villas and pretty gardens and wander through the historic centre brimming with chic shops, Viennese-style coffee houses, bars and restaurants.

Day 3 Brijuni Islands & Pula
This morning we head to the port of Fažana, close to Pula, and enjoy a 20 minute boat journey to the Brijuni National Park, comprising 14 beautiful islands. During our visit we enjoy a sightseeing tour on a land train which includes a visit to a Safari Park, archaeological museum, Roman ruins, a Venetian Castle and Mediterranean Gardens. Cafés and restaurants are available for a lunch stop before returning to the mainland. In the afternoon we visit Pula, the largest town in Istria, famous for its magnificent Roman amphitheatre.

Day 4 Rovinj
Today we travel to Rovinj either exploring our private island at leisure, relaxing on the beaches or taking the ferry to Rovinj, famous for the St Euphemia Cathedral, the largest baroque building in Istria. Rovinj was originally an island too, but 250 years ago the narrow channel which separated it from the mainland was filled in. Rovinj is extremely pretty with numerous cafés and restaurants, galleries and an active fishing port and worth the effort if we can bear to leave our resort island!

Day 5 Lido di Jesolo via Portorož
We make our way to Lido di Jesolo, stopping enroute at the tranquil town of Portorož in Slovenia. We stretch our legs and enjoy the town with its lovely promenade, harbour and plenty of shops before continuing our journey.

Day 6 Venice
Stunning architecture and a labyrinth of mysterious passageways await in the alluring city built on a lagoon. Gaze in awe at the Grand Canal, reflecting the glories of Venetian architecture lining its banks, the Gothic Palazzo Ducale, Doge’s Palace and the Basilicas of San Marco and Santa Maria della Salute. Venture further into its back streets and discover churches and museums lined with priceless marble and antique treasures aplenty, and, of course, there is the option of a ride in one of the world-famous gondolas!

Day 7 Padua & Vicenza
This morning we travel to the medieval city of Padua, home to Italy’s second-oldest university established in 1222. Here we can take a stroll around the historic streets and visit the Scrovegni Chapel, with its priceless frescoes by Giotto, and The Basilica of St Anthony. In the afternoon we travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vicenza, known for its fine 16th century architecture. Vicenza is also famous for its trade in precious metals and is also known as the ‘City of Gold’. We can enjoy free time to explore the beautiful, compact town centre with its attractive shops and impressive buildings.

Day 8 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
