Weston, Wells & Cheddar Man

Follow in the heroic footsteps of the men and women who have served in the Fleet Air Arm, relax in the charming seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare, explore England’s smallest city and meet Cheddar Man at Cheddar Gorge, famously unveiled in 2018 - all featured in our fantastic tour of Somerset!
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Fleet Air Arm Museum
We spend this morning at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, which tells the story of the men, women, aircraft and ships who have served with the flying arm of the Royal Navy since the early 20th century. The world-renowned collection includes many unique and significant aircraft, from the early box kites and seaplanes flown by heroic pioneers, to the remarkable Harrier Jump Jet and modern day helicopters. In the afternoon, we spend time in the lovely seaside town of Weston-super-Mare - walk along the Grand Pier and admire the stunning views before visiting the refurbished Weston Museum.

Day 3 Wells
This morning, we travel to Wells to meet our guide for a walking tour of the smallest City in England. We learn about the history of Wells Cathedral, the famous 14th century Astronomical Clock, The Bishop’s Palace, the town crier and the remarkable Vicars’ Close, before enjoying lunch and browsing the award winning Somerset Farmers’ Market which
is held every Wednesday (9.00 am to 2.30 pm).

Day 4 Cheddar Gorge & Caves
We spend today at Cheddar Gorge & Caves, visiting the remarkable Gough’s Cave and Cox’s Cave, full of beautiful rock formations and stunning features. We also visit the Museum of Prehistory where we discover the story of the cannibalistic Horse Hunters of Cheddar Gorge and learn about Cheddar Man, the oldest skeleton to be found in Britain, who was buried in the cave 9,000 years ago. Thanks to DNA analysis, we have an idea of what Cheddar Man looked life after he was remarkably “brought to life” in 2018. Please note, some steps need to be negotiated in the caves.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.
