WWI Battles of Arras & the Somme

Our suggested itinerary focuses on the Battle of the Somme and the Battles of Vimy Ridge and Arras.
Day 1 Arrival
Today, we cross the Channel and make our way to Arras.

Day 2 The Somme 125km/78 mile round trip
This morning, our step-on tour guide will meet us at our hotel from where we will begin our 2.5 hour guided tour. We will first visit the Lochnagar Mine Crater Memorial at La Boisselle before visiting Thiepval where we will see the Franco-British Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, the largest and one of the most emotive memorials. We will bid farewell to our guide before making our way to Péronne, where we will have time to explore the Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum before enjoying lunch in the museum or the town. We will then return to Arras, where we will have some time free to explore the old town.

Day 3 Battles of Arras & Vimy Ridge 30km/19 mile round trip
Today we will focus on the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Second Battle of Arras, both of which occurred during the spring of 1917. We will begin at Vimy Memorial Park, where 10,000 Canadian soldiers were killed or wounded during their quest to capture Vimy Ridge from the Germans, which they successfully achieved on 12th April 1917. We will be provided with an informative guided tour of the short tunnels and trenches before returning to Arras for lunch. This afternoon, we will visit the atmospheric underground museum of Wellington Quarry, which was founded in memory of the thousands of men of the British Army and Dominion Forces who lived, worked and died under the city during the Great War of 1914 – 1918. The museum has been carefully created in a section of the many kilometres of tunnels dug by the British Army. Equipped with running water and electricity supplies, the labyrinth of rooms in the tunnels accommodated the soldiers’ living quarters as well as a large hospital housing operating theatres and 700 hospital beds.

Note: The Vimy tunnels tour may not be suitable for those with walking difficulties due to uneven ground.

Day 4 Departure
After breakfast, we board our coach for the journey home.
