Zell am See: Mountain, Lake & Glacier!

Our lovely family-run hotel in Zell am See is the perfect base for enjoying the spectacular snow-capped summits of this beautiful region, which provide even more stunning views in the warm summer months!
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel before dinner.

Day 2 Zell am See Driver’s Day Off
Today we enjoy a relaxing day in our resort and the local area. We can browse the small shops in the pedestrianised area around the hotel or take a picturesque circular cruise on the clear waters of Lake Zell. For lovers of all things alpine, there is a cable car within 3 minutes’ walk of the hotel allowing access to the Schmittenhöhe Mountain, which provides panoramic views of Lake Zell and some of the highest peaks in Austria.

Day 3 Kaprun & Kitzsteinhorn Glacier
This morning, we begin with a real highlight of our tour by travelling the short distance to the village of Kaprun. Here we board our cable car to travel to the summit of the Kitzsteinhorn (3209m above sea level), one of the highest accessible points in Austria. At the summit, we will enjoy breathtaking views from the panoramic platform and the Nationalpark Gallery, providing us with a fascinating insight into the origins and nature of the region.

Day 4 Grossglockner Alpine Pass & Lienz
We board our coach this morning for our journey on a scenic drive over one of the highest alpine passes in Europe, the Grossglockner Alpine Pass. This alpine road opened in 1935, permitting exploration of an area previously closed to all except mountaineers. Now much improved from that era, there are multiple stopping points, mountain inns and visitor centres to add to the enjoyment. We descend the other side into the East Tyrol region of Austria and to its capital, Lienz. We enjoy free time here in the “Pearl of the Dolomites” before returning to our hotel via the Felbertauern tunnel.

Day 5 Berchtesgaden & Eagle’s Nest
Our journey today takes us northwards across the border into nearby Germany and the mountain resort of Berchtesgaden. Originally, the town found its wealth in rich salt deposits nearby, but later became famous for being the location of Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest”, perched 6,000 ft on top of the mountain. Since 1952, the building has been open to the public as a mountain top restaurant with a spectacular view.

Day 6 Departure
After breakfast we begin our journey home.
