Scenic Andorra, Spain & France

Overview

The tiny principality of Andorra, nestled between France and Spain, is a land of alpine charm, narrow valleys and mountainous landscapes. Full of pretty villages and charming vistas, and perfectly located for crossing the border and visiting its neighbours!

Rob says…
I spent almost 17 years living in the alps, so visiting Andorra is like coming home for me. While famed as a winter resort Andorra is truly at its most beautiful in the summer months; lush green mountains bathed in sun with just a touch of white at the very highest peaks. The Hotel Nordic is modern but built in a chalet style which complements the surroundings perfectly. Of special note is the owner’s passion for collecting vintage vehicles – the reception foyer is a museum to classic cars and motorbikes of yesteryear.

Itinerary

PACKAGED ITINERARY

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Guided Tour of Scenic Andorra with Lunch
Today we enjoy a fascinating full-guided tour of Andorra with our first stop in the picturesque village of Canillo. We have a photo stop at the Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Casselles before enjoying the stunning drive up to the Coll de Ordino. Afterwards, we head down to the parish of Encamp to visit the Romanesque Church of Les Bons. We head on to La Massana and stop at Pal for a delicious tapas lunch with wine. After lunch, we will drive past the rugged Comapedrosa Natunal Park before finishing the day with a visit to the oldest Andorran distillery, founded in 1937 – learn the history and sample some homemade liqueurs.

Day 3 Three Countries Tour
This morning, we cross the border into Spain, to the pretty town of La Seu d’Urgell, historically one of the most important cities in medieval Catalonia, full of Romanesque architecture such as the Santa Maria Cathedral. A market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday, and it is documented that there has been a market held here since the year 1029! We then visit the riverside town of Puigcerdà. On the border with France, the town has interesting monuments as well as lovely sunny pavement cafés. Our next stop is the French Pyrenean ski resort of Font-Romeu, before we return to Andorra via the Port d’Envalira mountain pass.

Day 4 El Tarter Driver’s Day Off
We spend today at leisure. We can enjoy the hotel’s extensive facilities or take a walk in the beautiful countryside.

Day 5 Vall de Núria & La Molina
We leave the principality today and head over the Spanish border, through the Catalan countryside, to the village of Ribes de Freser. From here we wind our way up the mountain on the historic rack railway to picture-perfect Vall de Núria – at 2,000 metres above sea level, we enjoy spectacular views. Then we return to our hotel via La Molina, one of the area’s mountain resorts.

Day 6 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
