This tour takes in some magnificent scenery including the stunning Rhine Falls and pretty town of Schaffhausen in nearby Switzerland as well as visits to botanical gardens and lakes Constance and Titisee, whilst also including a day in our delightful spa resort base in the Black Forest.
PACKAGED ITINERARY
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 Rhine Falls & Schaffhausen
Today we head south into the most northerly region of Switzerland. Here we experience the drama and beauty of the magnificent Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe. In the summer months, we enjoy a 30-minute boat trip with an audio guide that departs from Schlössli Wörth and sails close to the central rock for which the Falls are so famous. We then make our way to the nearby medieval town of Schaffhausen to explore at leisure. Known as the prettiest town in Switzerland, the houses of the pedestrianised Old Town are richly decorated with oriel windows and lavishly painted facades, while the iconic Munot Fortress towers above the town and can be seen for miles.
Day 3 Mainau & Constance
Today we drive towards Lake Constance and visit Mainau Island, known for its botanical gardens, the Castle of the Teutonic Order, its butterfly house and Palm House. We enjoy a 90-minute guided walking tour of Mainau’s botanical treasures before we travel the short distance to Constance, a town of great historical relevance and the most important on Lake Constance, to spend some time at leisure.
Day 4 Bad Dürrheim Driver’s Day Off
Today is spent relaxing in our fabulous spa resort, making the most of the lovely leisure facilities. We might also like to stretch our legs and explore our surrounds – Bad Dürrheim town centre is less than 10 minutes’ walk away.
Day 5 Lake Titisee & Pig Tail Railway
Today we visit the north shore of Lake Titisee, one of Germany’s prettiest lakes, and join the ‘Titus’ – built as a replica of a Roman galley – for an enjoyable 25-minute cruise, before exploring the town of Titisee-Neustadt itself. After free time here for lunch, we continue our scenic drive to Weizen, where we board the scenic Sauschwänzlebahn (or Pig Tail Railway) for the scenic ride through the countryside to Blumberg. From there we return to our hotel. Note: Steam train is not guaranteed on all services. Service runs on a Thursday from June to September and selected dates outside this period.
Day 6 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
This modern, family-run, 4 star hotel is traditional in style and located within a 5 to 10 minute stroll from the town centre. The public areas are bright and spacious and include a reception, bar, restaurant, roof terrace and garden. The 139 bedrooms are light and spacious, each with its own balcony, TV and hairdryer. The hotel has extensive leisure facilities that include a large indoor swimming pool, saunas, gym and spa services. There is also an atmospheric wine cellar where wine tasting and raclette can be enjoyed.
