Rhineland Christmas Markets

Welcome to the Rhineland, Germany’s beating industrial heart. This vast, sweeping metropolis is home to over 10 million people and the major cities of Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Duisberg and Cologne, to name just a few. Lining the banks of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers, the region is responsible for 15% of the entire economic output of Germany.

On this tour we discover the festive traditions and local ways which make this part of the world so charming. From our base in Gelsenkirchen, we explore Christmas markets in Düsseldorf & Dortmund - as well as the city of Wuppertal, where we are treated to an incredible historic journey, flying above the city in an iconic and unique transport system.
Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in Gelsenkirchen in time for dinner.

Day 2 Wuppertal & Dortmund
We travel the short distance to Wuppertal this morning, where we board the famous “Schwebebahn” (Floating Railway) for an amazing journey, winding between the town’s rooftops on a track that follows the Wupper River, as we look down on the festivities below. We have an amazing opportunity to ride in the Kaiserwagen, the personal carriage of the eccentric Kaiser Wilhelm II, who famously travelled on the line in 1900 before the 'steel centipede' was opened to the general public.

We continue on to Dortmund, which boasts one of the biggest Christmas markets in Germany - with over 300 stalls encircling a gigantic 45m tall Christmas tree creation, reputed to be the biggest in the world. Made up of 1,700 individual trees, its 13,000 lights bathe the Christmas proceedings in a seasonal glow.

Dortmund offers plenty of opportunities for shopping, offering handicrafts like seasonal wood carvings, Christmas decorations and unusual toys, as well as a multitude of stalls selling food & drinks. Guests can relax with a glass of hot mulled wine at one of the outdoor bars, or enjoy traditional sausages, Westphalian grilled ham, roasted almonds, pancakes and many other delicious delicacies.

Day 3 Düsseldorf
Today we visit Düsseldorf and its wondrous Christmas Market, with gingerbread houses, outdoor ice rink, themed market stalls, arts & crafts huts and "Sternchenmarkt" ("Little Star Market") - with its own illumination, crystals that break the light into thousands of colours and sparkling stars, creating a winter landscape to dream about. Schadowplatz is particularly family-friendly, with a merry-go-round and special activities for children. Or take a walk along the world-famous Königsallee, where a thousand brilliant lights illuminate the giant chestnut trees lining the boulevard.

Düsseldorf has plenty to entertain both young and old, and we will spend the rest of the day at leisure here before returning to Gelsenkirchen. We might choose to visit one of the city’s acclaimed art galleries & museums, or opt for a ride up the 175m Rheinturm (Rhine Tower) for fantastic views over the area.

Day 4 Departure
We bid goodbye to Germany and head home.
